Sans' POV:
I sighed, walking through the many fields of dead trees. Everything around me was death, only amplified by the fact that I, myself, was death.
Why had I been chosen? I mean, it made sense, I was at ease with killing most of the time because I understood what death meant and I understood order and balance, but I still didn't understand it.
With Chara, it made sense, she wanted the destruction and thought of the end as a beautiful thing. She would have been a better death than I am. But then something happened, her time was up in a flash, and I was supposed to kill her. I couldn't, though. There was something about her, a mysterious wisdom, that I just couldn't kill. And her sister, Frisk, she wanted her to live on so badly. She begged for her life, they both did, and I couldn't bring myself to kill her.
Then the darkness consumed her.
I knew it was my fault, all the death in the world, all the evil that consumed Chara. She would have been better off dead at this point.
Thinking of this technically it was kind of Frisk's fault. If she hadn't guilted me if they both hadn't guilted me maybe--No. It was my fault. Being Death, I couldn't let these kinds of things slide. How could I have been such a fool?
"SANS!" I heard my brother call me in the distance, his voice echoing.
I sighed and teleported to my station and leaned on the edge of it nonchalantly.
"Yeah, bro?"
He whipped around, eyesockets wide.
"OH! HELLO THERE, SANS! I-I WAS JUST WONDERING IF YOU RAN INTO ANY HUMANS WHILE YOU WERE PATROLLING?"
I narrowed my eye sockets at him a little bit, "Why do you ask?"
"O-OH! I WAS JUST WONDERING SINCE, WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A FEW YEARS, A-AND I WANT TO BE THE ONE TO CATCH THEM!"
I shook my head, "I've seen nothing, bro. Maybe soon, though."
Papyrus looked tense after I said that. I frowned even more.
"Do you know something that I shouldn't know, Paps?" I stood up from leaning.
He started to sweat a little bit, "N-NO! I TELL YOU EVERYTHING, SANS!"
I stared him down, my face looking borderline angry, as I wanted it to. He took a few steps back and looked around nervously, before looking down.
"I-I MET A HUMAN TODAY. THE ONE THAT YOU WERE AFTER. . . I-I HELPED THEM. . ."
I laughed, "That's fine, Paps. I just ran into them, so did Undyne, I could've killed them."
Papyrus looked freaked out as I paused for a minute.
"But I didn't. I was very tempted, but eh, didn't really feel up to it."
I didn't mention Chara, not yet. That name gave everyone down here anxiety, even if they didn't say it.
Papyrus kind of frowned, "REALLY? DESPITE THAT BEING YOUR JOB?"
I laughed again, "You know I hate my job, Paps. And why would I kill someone who would upset the balance even further?"
"HOW IS THE BALANCE UPSET RIGHT NOW?"
"There's been some stuff that's been happening lately, and well, it's not helping this world keep whole. I just hope that I'm not here went it inevitably ends."
My eye sockets widened after the words finished their way out of my mouth. I had never known that I would have thought of something like that. . . I never knew that I'd say something like that.
Papyrus looked as shocked as I did.
"I-I. . ."
"Welcome to the darkness, Sansy," Chara whispered from behind me.
I whipped around, summoning my scythe, but she wasn't there. I tried to calm down as Papyrus addressed me.
"SANS, ARE YOU ALRIGHT? Y-YOU'RE ACTING STRANGE. . ."
"I-I fine Paps. I'll be back later, o-okay? I need to go a-and talk to someone. . ."
"SANS--"
But I was already gone, teleported away. I checked around before I entered the Ruins.
This was war, declared by a dead girl.
And she was not going to win.
