From the helm, Thorne watched as Scarlet and Wolf crossed back over to he Solstice. Caught them holding hands and watching the waves. He even saw Wolf stealing longing glances at Scarlet, and double went for Scarlet to Wolf.
They were clearly in love.... and Thorne was experiencing something he hadn't felt in a long time. Jealousy.
Of course, Scarlet and Wolf were happy together, finally reunited. They must have been soul mates, meant to be together. Fate shined on them kindly, allowing them to find one another again and have a shared life they'd always dreamed of. Of course they would be granted such a kind destiny.
And he was stuck in solitude, hopelessly longing for the days when he knew love and contentment. When his heart was filled with nothing but caring and joy, rather than emptiness and endless desire.
Thorne knew that becoming a pirate captain who sailed the seas would take its tole on his life. But he thought it would be in the ways of alcohol and scurvy. Not bitterness towards people who were happily and truly in love.
Sure, he used to get drunk and rely on rum to comfort him in times of distress. Now, all of that had changed. He rarely allowed his lips to touch a bottle of anything that was not water or fruit juice.
Thorne told a nearby crew member to man the helm, as he needed some time to himself to calm his nerves and distaste. Once the wheel was under control, Thorne left for his quarters.
He locked the door behind him, though he knew no one would dare enter the room without knocking and requesting permission to open the door first. That is, if they desired to not be shot. He just wanted to be alone for a little while. To reminisce without being interrupted by anyone who could never possibly understand his pain.
Just standing in his room was a reminder of what he'd lost. Nights when he fell asleep, wrapped in the warmth of love and compassion were long gone. His hopes of renewing that feeling dwindling. Every passing day was another day closer to never feeling the love he lost again.
And he still had no idea what happened to the one he loved.
For all he knew, she was being tortured at this exact moment. Screaming in agony and begging for mercy. Thorne knew that his enemy wouldn't kill her, she was much to valuable to kill. That did not mean however, that she wouldn't harm her to get what she wanted.
Thorne's greatest enemy was the woman he needed to overthrow and stop in order to get his loved one back. The woman he was at the top of the list to kill.
Lieutenant Sybil Mira.
She stole the most valuable thing in his life. His precious diamond among the useless jewels. His star in the darkness. His sweet, irreplaceable little fish in the sea. The day Sybil stole her from him, Thorne vowed to destroy her and everything she'd ever worked for, ever wanted. Because Thorne became the best man he could ever become. For her, he would do anything.
Including overthrow a damn queen to find her.
Thorne had an end game, as any good planner would. Finding Cinder was just pure luck, as though the universe was pushing him closer to defeating Queen Levana in order to take down Sybil. He would fight until his last breath to save the woman he loved.
And if he found out that anyone even touched her, he would return the favor tenfold. Believe anyone when they tell you that Thorne can be exceptionally creative when he's inspired.
Sitting down on his bed, he thought back to the life he lived with her. His heart nonexistent, his head numb. His thoughts were twisted with heartache and longing. It was killing him. Not just through driving him mad with memories of the past he'd been ripped from. It was the absence of her touch, her voice, her gorgeous eyes that glistened with every flicker of the light.
