"And though she be but little, she is fierce," ~ William Shakespeare
"I can't believe we have an apartment this year," I said to Veronica, carrying a cardboard box through the door.
"You can thank me," Veronica laughed. "And your brother. Remember, he's the one who found us this place."
"He's also the one paying for a third of it," I laughed along.
Scott was a sweetheart. After what happened in the residence buildings last year, he didn't want to leave Veronica or I stuck there again. He needed to get out of Dad's house too, so we all chipped in and got an apartment together. It was a ten minute walk from campus, and a half hour from Scott and I's childhood home.
"Well, if Rachel doesn't step up her game, I'll be paying for half of it," Scott teased me, and I stuck my tongue out at him.
"It's not like you can't afford it," I argued. "You make more than the cost of my yearly tuition, and you're only twenty-five."
"I have connections," Scott said simply, and he took the box from my hands.
Scott and I have always been close. He's five years older than I am, but he was never embarrassed of me growing up. At least he's never mentioned it. Him and I look almost exactly the same, only I have tits and he's six foot three. We both look like our mother (unfortunately) with dark brown hair and green eyes. Scott's eyes are debatably much bluer than mine, but his don't change as often as mine do.
"I still can't believe you cut off all your hair," Veronica said to me, the two of us putting away kitchen utensils.
I shrugged and felt the back of my head. There was only maybe an inch of hair there and it made me happy. "I'm twenty now," I said. "Besides, I've wanted to do this forever."
"I know that," Veronica told me, handing me some blue, plastic cups. "But when Scott and I walked in on you with a razor and Avril Lavigne in the background, we thought you were pulling a Brittney.
"I wasn't, though!" I exclaimed. "I didn't shave all of it. I left more on top. It's a pixie, get with the program."
"Get me the next box," Veronica laughed, and I pushed it over to her with my foot.
This year was going to be great. It had to be. None of us had anything tying us down. We were free from campus-living rules, free from time consuming relationships, and free from our parents. What could possibly go wrong?
I heard loud crash and a "shit," from Veronica. She had dropped a plate. Okay, so besides that, what could possibly go wrong?
