It was quarter past midnight, and Veronica and I were still awake. The two of us were sat on her bed, our backs against the wall, eating popcorn and going over our schedules for the year. Veronica got quiet for a moment, and then closed her little planner book.
"What?" I asked her.
She sighed and turned to face me. "What are you gonna do about J.D?" she blurted out.
"What do you mean, 'What am I gonna do?'" I asked her. "There's nothing to do. He's fine, I'm fine."
"He's confused," Veronica interrupted me and I shook my head.
"It's been how many months, Veronica? Nearly five? I think he's fine," I argued.
"No, Rach I know he's fine," Veronica said to me. "I just don't want you to get upset when-"
"When what?" I asked irritably.
"When you see him and that girl he's been hanging around with," she sighed. "I took a walk around campus yesterday, during freshman orientation, and he was walking around with some freshman girl."
I gagged and Veronica laughed. "It's not funny!" she said. "You're fine that he's over you?"
"It's like you don't know me at all," I laughed, removing the popcorn bowl from my lap and standing up. "When's the last time I was upset over him?"
"May," she replied, and I raised my eyebrows.
"Exactly," I said. "Good for him and his girl. I have other things to worry about."
Veronica shrugged, unconvinced, but I knew what I was talking about. I turned towards the door to wash up before bed.
"Rach," Veronica mumbled, and I turned around. "You never told anyone why you did it in the first place."
"I know," I replied.
I turned again and walked out of the bedroom. This crap with J.D was over and done with.
