I exited the apartment building through the back door that leads to the lot J.D had written. At my feet, sat a Nerf Gun.
"You've got to be kidding me," I mumbled to myself.
I picked it up and found a sticky note on the side.
"Each bullet has blue paint on the tip," it read. "There's fifteen in each gun. Whoever gets hit with the most has to admit it."
"What the hell is he talking about?" I said to myself, looking around for J.D.
"Jason Dean!" I yelled. "Where the hell are you?"
I heard a soft click, and was soon hit in the forehead with a dart.
"You son of a bitch," I mumbled, watching the dart fall onto the pavement. I felt wet paint on my forehead and sighed heavily.
"Alright," I said. "I'm done with your games J.D"
I moved around the back lot, and was hit again twice in the back. I spun around and saw him for a split second. I fired three darts and each hit J.D in the chest. He fired again, but I could see him clearly. I ducked out of the dart's way, and heard J.D curse under his breath.
"The thing you don't understand, Jason," I started, "is that, while you're an only child, I grew up with a brother. I have plenty of practice with these suckers." I fired again twice and hit him both times. He cursed again as I ran behind the dumpster.
"Alright, you little shit," he warned. "Where'd you go?"
I popped up from behind the dumpster and shot three times, missing just once.
"Fuck!" he yelled, firing twice at me.
One of the bullets bounced off my foot, the other one getting me in the leg.
"I'm also much smaller than you are, Cottontail," I reminded him, sprinting to crouch behind a parked car. "You have nowhere to hide."
I popped up from behind the car and yelped. J.D spun around and fired his last darts at me, only one of which hit me in the arm. I still had four bullets left, but it didn't matter. He had one more blue mark than I did. I won.
"Ready to surrender?" I asked, still standing behind the car and tapping the Nerf gun in my free hand.
"How many bullets you got left?" J.D challenged, his breathing slightly heavy from running around.
"Four," I told him. "I win regardless."
"Well," he panted, "you've got power, kid. Power I didn't know you had."
I came out from behind the car and stood a few feet away from him. "It's about time,"
I muttered and he laughed at me. "Now, what the hell is this about?" I asked.
"Whoever gets hit the most has to admit it," J.D explained, holding his arms up in defeat. "You've got one more on me than I got on you."
"And?" I asked, confused.
J.D put his arms down and looked at the ground. He chuckled at himself and looked back up at me.
"I'm in love with you," he said slowly, a few strands of hair falling into his face.
