"When everything's
made to be broken,
I just want you
to know who I am." Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls
Dear Luke, March 11, 2014
I'm in the car right now, about to see you. About to see your mouth move and your dimple poke through your cheek when you smile. I can't wait to feel your arms slide around my waist, protecting me. I can't wait to hear your voice and not some automatic recorded shit.
Calum's happy for the first time since January 17th. And I'm happy to see him like that.
Did you know that he is singing right now? He's singing some All Time Low song. I think it's Backseat Serenade.
I'm sitting in the back of the car with Jack. Liz is up front driving and Calum is probably annoying the hell out of her in the passenger. Ben and Michael are in the middle, playing Pokemon against each other.
It's not dark and gloomy anymore. We're smiling, and it's because of you.
Guess what day it is? it's Friday. Now, they are a hundred times better.
I can't wait to see you. And I hope you can't wait to see me.
I'll tell you in the hospital.
-Ashton
Ashton closed the journal and tied it with the leather tie. Jack gave him a curious glance. "What do you write about in there?"
Ashton half smiled before putting the small book in his winter coat pocket. He rested his head against the window before answering. "I write about Flappy Bird and how much I adore it."
He grinned and a laugh escaped his lips. He reminds Ashton a lot of Luke. "I'm gonna take a nap."
Jack nodded and turned towards Liz as Ashton started dozing off. By the time Ashton fell asleep, they pulled into the hospital. Michael turned around from his seat and saw the older boy against the window, clutching the journal in his pocket. Michael cooed at the sleeping boy before whacking him upside the head.
"Wh- What the fuck, Michael?!" He shot up and rubbed his temple and cheek, blood rushing to the side of his face.
"Language, Ashton." Liz scolded.
Michael, Jack, and Ben were snickering all the way to the entrance of the hospital.
Calum walked beside Ashton down the long, white halls. They'd signed in already and were making their way towards Room 212.
Ashton rubbed his arms, trying to rid himself of the clean, cold feeling creeping on him. He should be elated right now, everyone else was. But he was scared. What if Luke hates him? It was his fault that he lost a good 7 weeks of his life.
Calum clapped a hand on his shoulder and smiled when they reached Room 212. "It's okay, mate. Liz, Ben, and Jack are going in first."
Ashton nodded, still unconvinced. What if it wasn't okay?
Michael and Calum stood on either side of Ashton and watched the three enter his room. They shut the door behind them.
Ashton sunk to the floor, Michael and Calum following his actions. It was quiet. Doctors and nurses walked over their long legs, some tripping. It was minutes or hours; Ashton couldn't tell. By the time he counted 36 staff members, the knob turned and Liz, Ben and Jack walked out.
Liz was crying, but happy tears. "Your turn guys. We'll be in the cafeteria." They all walked away, leaving the three boys standing there. Ashton wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. He opened the door and saw powder blue walls. IV's and monitors, tubes and needles, couches and chairs. The hospital bed was in the middle of the room and Ashton felt his heart crawl up his throat.
Michael shut the door behind them and they made small steps towards the bed, before Ashton bounded towards the boy. "Luke!" Luke's eyes widened as Ashton's arms wrapped around him. He held him in a bone-crushing hug, until two hands pushed him off. Ashton looked at Luke with hurt eyes.
"What was that for?"
Luke scratched the back of his neck and replied. "Who are you?"
