CHAPTER 18 RECAP

“Of course,” He says and a look passes over his face, “That reminds me, Ariel you’re still a minor, technically your mother still has custody of you.” He says and I can’t tell where he’s going with this, “You can’t stay here.”

Chapter 19: that makes you special

“That’s why I’m going to help you stay under the radar.” My dad tells me, and I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. I wasn’t sure where my dad was going with the whole, me not suppose to be here thing.

“What do you mean?” I ask him not sure why he would want to keep me under the radar. Why wasn’t he trying to send me back to my mother?

“If your mother finds out where you are she’s sure to bring you back home.” He says casually, leaning back in his seat as he eyes Roman and I, “That’s why we need to make sure you keep your head low.”

I lean forward, “Why are you trying to keep me hidden?” I ask him.

“Ariel,” he says my name but his eyes dart to Roman and I can see that he’s trying to make a decision, I guess he finally comes to a conclusion because he starts to speak, “My private investigator blew up a picture of you when you were on your way here.” He says tapping his fingers on the arm of the chair, “I know about the black eye.” He finally tells me. “I also know that what happened wasn’t a one time thing.”

There’s silence in the room. My father is looking at me, and I’m looking back at him, while Roman is silent and still.

“I can’t try to file for custody, that would only send you back to your mother until the case is solved.” He looks at Roman and I, and I know there’s something he wants to say, but I don’t ask. “I think that if you stay here, no one will find you.” He tells me, “I’ve already had all the security cameras that I used to find you cleared, so there’s no trail of you coming here. I have something for you.” He tells me going in his pocket and pulling out an envelope, “This should help.” He says and passes the envelope to me.

He goes in his pocket and pulls out a wad of cash, I’m surprised when he passes it to Roman. “For her rent, and other expenses.” He say and I’m completely blown away.

Roman looks at the cash and back at my dad, “This is too much.” He tells him trying to pass him the cash back.

My dad shakes his head, “You didn’t have to take her in, but you did, keep it.” He tells him and his tone makes it clear that his decision is final.

My dad looks at his watch and stands up straightening his suit, “I have to go,” He goes in his pocket again, and I start to believe that it leads to Narnia. “Here you go.” He says pulling out the latest iphone, “This is yours now, it has my number in it, so call me if you need anything.” He tells me. “Do you have your old phone?” He asks me and I nod, “Get rid of it, make sure you destroy the sim card, they may think to trace it.”

I nod my head since I’m a bit speechless. I stand up and Roman does too, my father hold his hand out to him, “Nice to meet you Roman.” He says and I begin to wonder if Roman told him his name before he came upstairs to get me. The look on Roman’s face says otherwise. My dad’s gaze shifts to me, “Do you have a car?” He asks catching me by surprise.

“Not here,” I tell him since I left my car at home in California.

He nods his head, “What’s your favorite color?” He asks me.
