Silence. Silence was once something that felt quite comfortable between Shawn and Katy, natural even. However, this particular silence felt different. It was almost deafening. Katy attempted to ignore it at first, but Shawn wasn't even bothering to hide the fact that he was clearly upset.
Katy sighed, dropping the laundry basket she was carrying onto the bed. “Is there a problem, Shawn? Do you have something you need to say to me?”
Shawn shook his head, looking down as he sat on the edge of the bed. “I thought you were taking the day off from Topanga's. You know, since you have a show later tonight”
“I'm sorry, I can't do that Shawn. With Topanga on leave right now, I have to make sure the place is running smoothly for her. She needs me there.” said Katy.
Shawn mumbled quietly under his breath. “Well maybe I need you here..”
“What was that?” asked Katy.
“Nothing, Katy. Have fun at work.” Shawn replied as he picked up the baby and headed towards the living room.
“Shawn, I don't understand. What's going on now? I mean, I thought we had a great time last night..” started Katy as she followed behind him. She was of course referencing the cruise and their night at the hotel.
“Yeah that was great. But now it's back to reality, ya know?” said Shawn.
The thing that Katy feared the most would happen seemed to be happening right in front of her eyes and she couldn't shake the sinking feeling she felt in her chest.
She didn't quite know what to say that would make things better at the moment. So she said nothing at all.
Instead, she got ready for work and left, and for the first time since they got married, she didn't kiss Shawn goodbye.
-----
About an hour after Katy had left, Maya got herself ready for plans of her own. These days Maya tried her best to keep herself busy and find any excuse possible to get out of the house, and that day was no different.
Though she was young, Maya was quite perceptive and wise beyond her years. She knew very well that the “honeymoon phase” of her mother and Shawn's marriage was long over. And she had no intention of sticking around to watch it crumble.
Maya had made plans to hang out with Lucas and Zay to watch the latest Fast and Furious movie since they were the only three out of their friend group who actually had an interest in the film. It was far from Maya’s favorite film series, but she grasped at any opportunity to spend time elsewhere.
“Where are you going?” asked Shawn, stopping Maya right in her tracks before she could even get to the door.
The blonde sighed, rolling her eyes. “I'm going to hang out with friends and watch a movie”
“Did you forget it's your day to watch the baby? I have a ton of work to get done here, Maya. You need to take him with you” said Shawn.
“Are you freaking kidding me right now? I can't take him with me!” Maya protested as she watched Shawn place the baby in his stroller and hand Maya his diaper bag.
“No, I'm not kidding. You can and you will” responded Shawn.
Maya sulked as she pushed the stroller out of the apartment, down the elevator, and out of the building.
She could feel eyes piercing into her skull as she walked down the busy street. She could tell they were staring at her, probably judging and thinking the baby was hers. Of course.
