It was now well after dark and Katy bundled her son with blankets to keep him warm from the slight chill. While she was leaving the apartment, her mind began to race.

Where would she go? Her first thought was Topanga but she quickly decided against it. The Matthews were currently busy enough as it is with the twins on the way. It wouldn't be right to burden them.

She thought of her mother. That would be an okay option but Katy knew she didn’t want to deal with her mother's condescending tone full of judgment and I-told-you-so’s.

She'd have to catch a taxi soon so she had to think faster. In a way, it was sort of funny how Katy felt as though she had plenty of friends, but very few close enough that she would feel comfortable going to in a crisis.

The woman let out a small sigh of relief once she remembered that there was someone. Someone who arguably knew her better than anyone despite their friendship being somewhat estranged over the years.

Her childhood friend Bobbie Jo was currently staying in New York for the summer and Katy wanted to kick herself for forgetting that detail. Maybe she was more out of touch lately than she thought.

Bobbie Jo owned a condo in Midtown Manhattan and she lived alone, though she always insisted that she never got lonely. Katy could only hope that she wouldn't mind the company.

The taxi drove her to the front of the condominium. The neighborhood was so affluent that a security guard stood posted at the front door.

Katy stood in the lobby while she waited to be buzzed in and couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable at how out of place she felt. The entire atmosphere was very high brow, upper class with marble floors and very expensive looking decor.

Finally, they got through to Bobbie Jo and she got onto the elevator that lead to Bobbie Jo’s floor. The elevator doors opened on the 8th floor and she pushed the stroller down the corridor until she reached the apartment. Katy knocked on the door and her friend answered a few moments later.

Katy was met with an expression of confusion at first, then empathy from Bobbie Jo once she saw the look in her best friend's eyes. Katy didn't even have to say anything. After knowing her for practically all her life, Bobbie Jo knew that look.

“Katy Grace, what's going on?” questioned Bobbie Jo, her tone laced with concern.

Katy's voice cracked when she spoke. “Can I stay here for a little while?”

Bobbie Jo’s heart broke for the woman who stood before her. Her friend. The woman who masked her brokenness with a shield of strength now stood before her with a fragile soul and a world of hurt in her eyes.

“Of course, honey. Just hold on one second” said Bobbie Jo as she closed the door slightly and went back inside. Katy waited by the doorway and she could hear the other woman and then a man's voice. Bobbie Jo clearly had company that night.

A few minutes went by, then a half dressed man with an annoyed expression exited the condo. Once he was gone, Bobbie Jo motioned for her to come inside.

“I'm so sorry, I didn't realize you had company. I probably should've called first..” said Katy as she walked inside.

“Katy. Stop. You know you come first no matter what” assured Bobbie Jo.

Katy smiled at that comment, thinking back to when the two of them were out at the lake one summer when they were 15 and they made a promise that they would always put each other first before any guy.
