POUNDING. that's all she felt in her head. instead of waking up instantly; alert and active, it came in flashes. her head lulled side to side, and she felt sick again. the feeling reminded her of being hungover.

mariah had gotten drunk only once, at a grad party last summer.

but this, this was way worse.

the sky was already starting to fade, turning into a deep blue. she saw this in one of the flashes, and tried to trade her confusion into consciousness. how long had she been out for?

she grunted, looking around the car. she was laid face down in the backseat, her hands stuck around her back. she struggled, feeling the coarse braided rope around her wrists. the bastard had tied her hands together.

when the girl lifted her head again, she saw the man. he was still driving, eyes squinted in concentration. mariah tried to speak, but her mouth was too dry. all she could do was smack her cracked lips. jeffrey turned and saw she was awake.

"welcome back!" his voice startled her, and she couldn't crane her neck up to glare up at him.

"shit, you need some water?" he asked. at the mention of a drink, mariah practically fell out of the seat. she managed to sit up and find a comfortable position against the door. she could see more out the windows from this level, they were still on a highway.

the rope was making it's way into her skin, and she tried to slip out of the knot. before she could twist her hands, a bottle of water landed in her lap, jeffrey's laugh following not far behind.

"have fun getting into that, you seem a little tied up at the moment."

she thrashed around, attempting to get out of the trap. while she was moving, her eyes met with the plush fabric of the seat.

it was crimson stained.

forgetting about her restraints, she sat up to catch her reflection in the rearview. blood caked the entire right side of her face, and there were hints of purple around her eye. the scratch from her father's ring was still visible, and from the looks of it, had split open. the rest of her face was long and tired, with her eye bags dragging every other feature downwards.
