A repeated agressive knocking woke mariah up from her not-so-satisfactory slumber. her eyes squinted against the harsh morning light as she sat up in bed. momentarily, she forgot about the man beside her until looking over.
his arm was lazily slumped over her torso, and she gently removed it before turning to look at his face. he was still asleep, mouth slightly open. she wished she could see him like this more often, a reminder that invincibility was a myth.
he always acted so rough and tough on the outside, if his enemies ever saw him sleep they might have a new perspective.
the knocking at the door continued, making her jump. from the bed, she leant over to peek out the window. upon seeing a blue uniform, her heart started to race.
mariah hit jeffrey in the arm as hard as she could, earning a sleepy grunt from him.
"jeff, wake up." she whispered.
his eyes slowly opened, showcasing heavy brown eyes. "what?" he mumbled, rubbing both hands over his face.
without hesitation, the girl pushed him as hard as she could. he fell sideways, toppling off the bed. with him out of sight, she could deal with this cop alone. chuckling at his grunts and groans, mariah stood and walked to the door.
through the peephole, she couldn't see much. just the typical attire and a stern face. she swore she knew that face, but couldn't put a name to it. with jeffrey, she had seen more cops than ever lately, so she decided to put the thought away.
sliding the lock out of it's slot, she opened the door and painted an innocent smile onto her face.
the smile faded almost instantly.
the cop, the one who looked all too familiar, was in fact, familiar. to make sure of this, she looked for a name tag. just like the day before, that name was 'euling'.
he was turned away, surveying the area. "ma'am, i'd like to ask you a few-" he turned back, looking mariah in the eyes. "well this is a coincidence."
