AS she opened her eyes in the backseat, mariah was reminded of the time when she first met jeffrey. it was only a few days ago, but so much had happened in between then and now. she was somewhere else. physically and mentally.

she sat up and looked around the car. she felt the teddy bear drop onto the floor from her arms.

it was morning somehow, the time couldn't have been past eight.

"jeff?" she tapped his shoulder, seeing the bags under his eyes from a mile away.

"have you been driving all night?"

he nodded, eyes drifting closed every few seconds.

"jesus christ, jeffrey. lets find a motel. you can sleep for a bit."

"no. we wasted too much time at that damn carnival." even his voice was rugged.

mariah shook her head. jeffrey was never one to talk about wasting time, especially if he had somewhere to be. obviously he was too out of it to think clearly.

"jeffrey, please. i can drive, if that helps. this isn't safe."

he mumbled another 'no', adjusting his grip on the wheel.

"look, if i went on that fucking gravitron for you, you can do this for me. i don't want you to get hurt." she told him.

he didn't respond for a while, as if he was considering his options. a few minutes later, he turned into a rest stop. there was a sign on the outside of the building advertising their showers, so she grabbed her bag from the trunk. jeffrey had the same idea.

inside, the two went in different directions to their respective bathrooms.

under the cool water, she smiled at the memories from the night before. she had never seen jeffrey that excited before. maybe the bright, neon lights effected his attitude, along with the muffled carnival music and exciting scenery. or maybe it was the sugar intake from his caramel apple that made him happy. nevertheless, jeffrey made her night.
