the "meaning"

it seems a lot of you are confused why jeffrey and mariah's story ended so abruptly.

in the prologue, i make the impression that this story will obviously have a vast time skip and i wanted to leave readers with a reason to start this story.

if i had written another chapter after chapter twelve, i wouldn't have known where to start. sure, i could've went into the different perspectives of mariah and jeffrey as their lives became eternally different, but that didn't make sense to me.

mariah's thoughts throughout this story are meant to imply that she couldn't live without jeffrey. this isn't meant to be taken the wrong way, obviously she's not the type to obsess over someone romantically/any other way.

if the mysterious chapter thirteen were to exist, all it would be is a stream of "i miss her" and "i miss him" from both parties as they eventually went different ways. i didn't think that would be entertaining to read, mostly because every other chapter flows so well because the two are together.

the last line, "the thing that bothered her, was the fact her handcuffs were too tight" means that she was starting to mentally check out. it says she was "numb. unable to feel". at this point, mariah has already started an endless stream of thoughts branching out from the fact of "holy fuck i'm actually being arrested"

if you look back at the prologue, mariah seems put together. she hints at the fact that her life has been nothing but sunshine and rainbows ever since she's known jeffrey. (well, for the most part. i'm sure her time in prison wasn't as sunny and rainbow-y)

the reason why jeff doesn't give her a chance to explain herself is because he knows she's been up to what she has. he's so quiet and lifeless because he wasn't present to see her achieve all the things she mentioned.

i said they couldn't live without each other, but ten years later, you can see mariah actually can live without him. jeffrey doesn't want to come to terms with that.

i don't know, i could just be firing blanks over here.

i hope this explains a little bit why it's so ominous and confusing.

i wanted to leave the ending up to the readers interpretation, much like i did with print. i wanted you to imagine what happened, instead of just commenting why it ended where it did.

if you've got any questions, send 'em over! i'd love to talk about your theories, or whatever questions or wonderings you have.

thanks for reading this far, i hope you enjoyed spending your time with my characters.
