"IM sorry all that scared you." jeffrey caught her attention away from the window, grabbing mariah's hand.

"it's okay. i'm basically used to it by now." she responded softly. she shivered under his jacket, feeling the draft from the non-existent back window. there was still glass in her hair, but she was too tired to move her arms.

"that's a lie, sweetheart."

"no, really. if i'm not used to it by now, i must be really close."

"you wouldn't have been cryin' in my arms if you were close, ri."

she sighed, turning her head to look out the window. "it's just...i wanted to be used to it by now. i wanted to be used to the constant adrenaline, the gun shots, all of that."

"you don't have to force yourself, it'll happen when it happens, alright?"

mariah bit her lip and nodded.

after a pregnant pause, jeffrey cleared his throat. "at least tell me my girl did something badass while i was busy."

she couldn't help the smile that edged across her lips as she turned back to him. "i knocked an officer out cold."

he threw his head back in laughter, pounding his fists on the steering wheel. "no fucking way."

"yes fucking way."

"little disappointed you didn't use my gun, but, that's impressive."

rolling her eyes, she pulled the gun out of her waistband. "sorry, i meant to give this back."

he looked at it, but didn't move a hand from the wheel. "keep it."

her mouth hung open in surprise. "no way. i can't keep this, it's your gun."

"i've already got one. keep it."

she grinned, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek. turning the safety on, she shoved it back into her waistband. luckily, her t-shirt was baggy enough to cover it.
