THEY were in california.

technically it was them plus a few police cars that were on their trail somewhere, but nevertheless, they were in california.

in all honesty, mariah never thought she would make it to this point. she felt like the journey was too short, but then turning out to be too long. she didn't want her story with jeffrey to end, and truthfully, she might've been okay with the idea of the road trip lasting a little bit longer than just six days.

but that's exactly what it had been. six days of action, adventure, arguments, and attachments. there were guns and gambling, love and loss. all the elements you needed to tell a great story, much less live it.

mariah was sure her and jeffrey would be the 'bonnie and clyde' of their generation, or some nonsense like that. their story would have documentaries and museum exhibits and 'this day in history' news articles.

she pictured herself, ten years from now. twenty-nine years old. the year would be twenty-twenty seven. she didn't know what state she would be in, how much money would be in her pocket, or even who's arm she'd be on.

but as soon as she pictured something in her mind, a fragment of the future, she shut it down.

because this was now.

and her story wasn't over yet.

outrunning the police hadn't been that much of a challenge, if she did say so herself. turns out, escaping on a motorcycle earned her and jeffrey much more style points than if they had taken the kia.

while on the motorcycle, jeffrey had fiddled with the radio dial. she only had to hear "convicts arriving in california" for her to realize they actually hadn't been caught yet.

about an hour into their ride there, the police had lost their way. jeffrey had taken a few country roads off the expressway, and their accessibility was much easier than a bulky cruiser. he dangerously went inbetween lanes to get there faster, setting the force at least ten minutes behind them.
