It dawned on me. There was no power in the house. Why was my landline working?! And what just happened on that phone call? Am I being hacked?!
My laptop, phone, the home phone... What can't you hack...?
I suddenly remembered. I definitely had something no one could hack.
I pull open the drawer under the land line and fish in for my prize. When my hand lands on the cold little device, I take it out and press down on the switch off button. It starts up immediately and relief washes over me.
God bless indestructible Nokia.
I open up text messaging and type in a message to my mom. I don't hesitate before hitting send.
Delivered! I wait for her reply. I should probably get out of the house but it's raining... Maybe it isn't such a great idea. The phone vibrates in my hand and I fumble with it to check the text that came. It was from my mom. Smiling, I opened the message.
The phone's screen disappeared for a moment and popped up a message. Just one blank empty message in the middle of the screen.
I drop the phone and stare at it in horror. What is going on here?! I thought you couldn't hack an old Nokia?! The phone vibrated once more. Hopeful that it was finally my mom, I grabbed it.
How...
I slowly put the phone back in the drawer. I don't even care anymore. Turning on my heel, I hurried to the front door and pulled on the door knob. It wouldn't even budge. Maybe the rain got into the locks somehow... How long does it take to rust again?
I turn over and head to the window but freeze when I hear footsteps from upstairs.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy.
I turn to the window and pull it open before lifting my foot up and putting it outside. It was uncomfortably cold outside and my socks were starting to soak up the water already. I pushed comfort out of my head and got out of the house. Whoever is in there – I hope you rot in hell.
I walk through the rain towards my friend's house when I hear a ping from the side. I ignore it, thinking it was someone else's phone but my pocket vibrates and the ping comes again. Confused, I reach into my pocket and my fingers wrap around the familiar shape. Shocked, I pull out my phone and stare at it.
iPhone 7 – splash proof?
I hope.
I try opening it but I notice that it now looks different. It had my messaging back ground on my lock screen. I keep my finger on the scanner and wait as my phone unlocks.
That's it. I turn around on my heel and head over to the nearest church. This is no hacker.
I'm being haunted.
Either that or this is some cruel prank and I did not appreciate it. Either way, I needed to pray for a bit.
