Oakley's POV
As I wake up laying across the foot of my bed, I realize everyone who was in here last night is gone. All of a sudden, I hear a commotion in the kitchen and quietly make my way to my door to eavesdrop.
"You know guys, I'm really stressed with a lot of things! You have to understand that I can't handle every issue at once!" I hear Lin yell.
"We understand that Lin, but ever since you brought in that girl you've been pushing everything else to the side! Your mother and I are sick of it!" I hear a man who I assume to be Lin's father yell.
"I welcome you into my home to meet my foster daughter and this is what I get? I'm so sick of this, get out!" Lin yells back, very angrily. I jump back a little, unaware that Lin has that kind of anger inside.
"We are your parents Lin, we want what's best for you. We're just looking out for you, that's all-" His mother says calmly, but is cut off by Lin,
"If you want what's best for me then why don't you let me do something good? Something good for me, Vanessa, Sebastian, and Oakley herself. She's a sweetheart, a true talent, and if you don't have any interest in saying one nice thing to her then you can get out of my apartment!" He yells, almost as harsh as the first time, and there is silence to follow it. I hear footsteps quickly begin to walk and a door open then slam shut. I let out a sigh of relief that this is over, but pause in my tracks of walking back to my bed.
What did I ever do to Lin's parents? They've never even met me, I don't understand what's wrong with me. Oh, wait, there's plenty of things wrong with me. Heck, Thayne and everyone I've met so far probably hates me. Why wouldn't they hate me? Everything about me is out of place, my personality, my-
"Oakley, sweetheart, did you hear all of that?" Lin asks, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"I, um, yeah..." I trail off, not knowing what to say.
"Come here," He says with a sad tone in his voice, leading me to sit down on the bed with him.
"They know nothing about you. They have no right to judge you, what you look like, who you are, or anything. I thought they would love you, they're so accepting of everyone and you're perfect for our family. I'm not letting them stand in the way of fostering you, though. That will never change, Oak." He says, patting me on the back. I give him a big hug, feeling immediately better from his words.
"Not that I don't love you, da- Lin, because I do, but can I hang out with Thayne today? I feel like I haven't seen him in so long, I feel like a part of me is missing without him being around to make me laugh." I say, realizing it's been a few days since I've been to the theatre.
"Oakley, it's only been two days since you've seen Thayne." Lin says with a chuckle.
"I know, but he's really special to me. He's like my big brother, I miss him so much. After Mitchell died not only was I an orphan but I was nothing, I was nothing without my brother. He's done so much for me and I wish I could've told him how much I loved him." I say, as a few tears begin to stream down my face.
"Okay okay, Oakley please don't cry, I'll take you to see Thayne right now," Lin says frantically, as he wipes my tears. I'm assuming he doesn't know how to deal with episodes of a teenage girl, but he'll adapt eventually. Lin goes to throw on some shoes, so I put on a casual pair of sweatpants that are light grey and a black #yayhamlet tee, then throw on some white converse. I run a brush through my hair and put it up into a high messy top knot, brush my teeth, then grab my phone and meet Lin by the door.
"You ready kiddo?" He asks, opening the door. I give him a nod and walk towards the elevator in silence.
After about twenty minutes of driving through the busy city streets, we arrive at Thayne's apartment complex. Lin parks at a meter and puts in a few quarters, earning about twenty four minutes for him to walk me up. We eventually reach the twelfth floor, where we make a right and are at Thayne's apartment. I lightly knock on the door, not wanting to hear anything loud after hearing the quarrels of my newly foster father this morning. Thayne opens the door and welcomes us in, but is quite confused.
"Hey guys, what's going on?" He asks. Lin looks at me, then at Thayne, who is looking at me the entire time.
"Thayne, can we chat somewhere in private?" Lin asks, scratching the back of his neck.
"Yep! Oak, treat yourself to any snacks in the pantry. I have some cookies in the oven, they'll be ready soon!" He says as he leads Lin to another room. I decide against raiding Thayne's pantry because I'd rather wait until I can rant to Thayne alone and stress eat. I plop down on the couch sadly, hoping that something good will come out of this.
