Christy's POV

------------------

Amber and I sat in the green room, chatting up a storm over leftover muffins. We'd gotten done early, and seeing as it was only 7:40, I decided to stay for a few minutes and relax. Hunter wasn't expecting me until eight anyways.

"I don't think I like 'In Christ Alone' in E minor, to be completely honest with you," Amber said, mouth full of blueberry muffin. Amber was the only other girl singing with me this weekend.

"Yeah, I feel you. But I feel like our fearless leader of a worship minister has had a weird obsession in playing everything in that key recently," I retorted.

"Maybe he's more simple-minded than we think," Amber responded. We were discussing the head of the church band, Ralph. He was very much a control freak.

"Possibly. So what all exactly happened with you and Alex? I don't mean to gossip or pry, but I kinda overheard you talking to your friend Ally in the foyer about it a few weeks ago," she asked cautiously.

Crap.

"Oh, uh, hehe. No it's fine. Um, we just kinda didn't work out. You know how it goes. Haha. Just, uh, moving on from each other I guess. Good 'ole relationships!" I said, swinging my right arm across my body in a 'jolly-good-time' gesture.

I could tell Amber didn't believe a word I'd said.

"Yuh huh. Because I don't want to appear nosy I won't ask. But you didn't cheat on him, did you?"

"Ha! No. No I didn't, technically."

"Technically?"

"He thought I did."

"Why?"

Oh my goodness. Shut up Amber.

"Who knows?"

"Weird. Whatever you say."

"Are you throwing my integrity in the mud because you don't believe my story of something that was completely none of your business? At least I flattered you and gave you some substance," I said, at this point a little frustrated.

Amber was definitely not the most insightful person I knew. But she was nice enough and meant well.

"You're right. I'm sorry."

"It's okay."

But that interaction had managed to send us spinning into uncomfortable silence, so the second I finished my muffin, I bailed.

"I'll see you early Sunday, Amber."

"Seeya Christy. Drive safe."

"Thanks."

I headed out the back exit, even though Hunter would meet me in the front. I figured I'd enjoy the few moments of fresh air walking outside the building.

It was a beautiful, clear May night. The sun had just set recently as the encroaching summer season had the sun setting later and later in the evening. A dim glow still lit the western sky and the light breeze wafted smells of flower and freshly cut grass from the meadow on the edge of the church property. I went to the front of the building and sat on a bench to wait for Hunter, glancing at my phone to check the time and notifications. There were none. And the time read 7:52. He wasn't supposed to be there for another eight to ten minutes.

I drifted into a daydreamish deep thought session, alone there on the bench in the peacefully comfortable evening. I listened to the breeze ooze throughout the tree branches, leaves rustling and birds chirping their final calls of the day.
