A lot has happened to the company of Thorin Oakensheild since they left the Shire. They've faced a bad down poor arguments among themselves. Balin had told everyone the story of Azog and Thorin at Moria. Missing horses and three cave trolls. They meet Radagast the Brown who is a wizard like Gandalf and is very fond of animals. Who then lead an orc pack away while Gandalf lead them through the hidden valley. But the orcs found them and they fought before following Gandalf into a hole. Meanwhile elves killed the remaining members of the orc pack and the company followed a tunnel. When they reached the other end they were in Rivendell.
They were soon surrounded by the elves that had killed the orc pack. Then Lord Elrond invited them all to dinner. However on the way they saw a painting of the most beautiful they've ever seen. "Who's that?" Ori asks in awe.
"The lost Princess of Lothlorien, Erelil" Lindir answers.
"Lost?" Bilbo asks confused.
"Yes, she was stolen from us many years ago and she has not been found. We all pray that she is alive and will return to us one day" Lindir states before walking on. The company follow him, meanwhile Gandalf was speaking to Lord Elrond.
During dinner Elrond examined two elven swords the company found in the trolls cave. The one Thorin had was called Orcist and was used during the goblin wars. While the one Gandalf had was called Glamdring that was also used in the goblin wars and that it was once used by the King of Gondolin. The dwarves complained about there being no meat and Ori asked if there were any chips (which there was none). They also weren't liking the music and thought they were at a funeral.
"Alright lads there's only one thing for it" Bofur announces and gets up onto the table. Then he started to sing while the dwarves cheered. And the elves looked on confused and unamused by the dwarves behavior.
"There is an inn, a merry old inn
beneath an old grey hill,
And there they brew a beer so brown
That the Man in the Moon himself came down
One night to drink his fill.
The ostler has a tipsy cat
that plays a five-stringed fiddle;
And up and down he runs his bow,
Now squeaking high, now purring low,
Now sawing in the middle.
The landlord keeps a little dog
that is mighty fond of jokes;
When there's good cheer among the guests,
He cocks an ear at all the jests
And laughs until he chokes.
They also keep a hornéd cow
as proud as any queen;
But music turns her head like ale,
And makes her wave her tufted tail
and dance upon the green.
And O! the rows of silver dishes
and the store of silver spoons!
For Sunday there's a special pair,
And these they polish up with care
on Saturday afternoons.
The Man in the Moon was drinking deep,
and the cat began to wail;
A dish and a spoon on the table danced,
The cow in the garden madly pranced,
and the little dog chased his tail.
The Man in the Moon took another mug,
and then rolled beneath his chair;
And there he dozed and dreamed of ale,
Till in the sky the stars were pale,
and dawn was in the air.
Then the ostler said to his tipsy cat:
'The white horses of the Moon,
They neigh and champ their silver bits;
But their master's been and drowned his wits,
and the Sun'll be rising soon!'
So the cat on his fiddle played hey-diddle-diddle,
a jig that would wake the dead:
He squeaked and sawed and quickened the tune,
While the landlord shook the Man in the Moon:
'It's after three!' he said" Bofur finish singing. All the other dwarves laugh merrily throwing their food around. One of food they threw nearly hit Lindir in the face, but got the wall beside him instead. After dinner Elrond took Gandalf, Balin, Bilbo and Thorin to somewhere private so that he could read their map. Meanwhile the other dwarves bathed and made a fire after finding some meat. They were all joking around eating the meat while they waited for the others return.At first Thorin did not want to show Elrond his map as it belongs to dwarves. But Gandalf finally convinced him to do so against Balin's judgement. Meanwhile Bilbo just watched on in silence unsure as to why he was brought to this meeting. Elrond took the map from Thorin and began to examine it by the candle lit. "What is your interest in this map?" Elrond asks after seeing it was a map of Erebor.
After Thorin answered Elrond said it was moon runes that could only be read on a specific night. Luck was on their side as Elrond lead them to a waterfall where the moon could illuminate the map. When it did the hidden runes appeared that told the dwarves how to enter the mountain. It said: Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light will shine on Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole.
Balin said they still had time to get to the mountain and find the door. Elrond told them there are some in Middle Earth that'd deem it unwise to enter the mountain. He took Gandalf away to speak to Saruman and Lady Galadriel. After Gandalf told Thorin to live and wait for him in the Misty Mountains. So while Gandalf destructed those in Rivendell, the company slipped away unnoticed by all except Lady Galadriel. Meanwhile Gandalf told the other three of Radagast's warning about the Necromancer and showed them the blade Radagast had given him.
