Terrified

The ride back home was silent.

He didn't speak he just let me process everything.

He didn't reach for my hand or asked any questions.

He parked in my drive way everyone seemed to have already left.

"How did you get everyone to get home?"

"It wasn't that hard really. Everyone pitched in and helped clean and pick up. They wanted updates whenever you got word."

"How come you didn't leave?"

He shifted around his seat.

"I was worried and I didn't want to leave you alone."

"You've done it before what makes this time any different."

"Belinda I-"

"Thank you for the ride home."

I jumped out of his car and headed to my door.

"Wait please!"

"Wait for what? This doesn't really change anything Robert. You left me. I was barely hanging on! I thought you were different, that was it for me. After everything, the past, the present, I had found you and that was it. I wasn't going to avoid it I was going to embrace it. Love you with everything I have. Everything I could. I gave you everything and you just cut me out after one bump in the road."

"I know."

"Why?"

He just stood there. Unable to speak.

"If you are just going to be silent I don't see the point of us doing this weird dance."

I opened the door and turned around.

"Lovely."

"Don't"

"I missed you. I would call everyday but would hang up on the second ring before you got the chance to answer. I would dream about you. Your smile, your laugh, that look on your face when you read and are so invested in the story. I missed everything about you. I was scared to be hurt again. To be toyed with again, my heart couldn't take another so I ran. I ran before you got the chance to hurt me any further but I ran because I was terrified and then I just missed everything about you. I would give up anything to just wake up next to you and smell your skin for the rest of my life."

His words punch me in the gut and took the air out of me.
