Ha ha, so guess what. Funny story actually. Kinda sorta broke my right hand. So yeah...
Percy's POV
The war against Hatch was won, but there had been too many casualties. Jake, Jason, Zeus, and Tessa, who had died of a fatal bullet wound, just to name a few, were gone. While New Rome had been left untouched, our Camp had suffered damages everywhere. Practically the only thing left standing was Thalia's tree and a couple of cabins. The devastation wasn't only in Camp Half-Blood, either.
With all of Hatch's electric rats dead from lack of care, every country that had relied on Starxource, which was a lot, had no power. The world had been dealt a huge blow and no one even knew how it happened. No one but the demigods.
The only thing left of my cabin was a couple of pieces of charred wood from when Tartarus had destroyed it. He literally dropped a bomb on the place that had been my home for five years.
I knelt, touching the pieces of my cabin. Everything was gone. My minotaur horn, Tyson's awesome hippocampi models. I shook my head, clearing my thoughts. A breeze blew around me, ruffling my hair and smelling of the sea. I looked towards the distant Long Island Sound, smiling even though happiness was the farthest thing from my thoughts. "Thanks, dad," I whispered faintly.
I stood at the sound of a roar, furrowing my eyebrows. "No, it can't be." But it was. I knew it the second Ian came sprinting out of the forest as fast as he could.
"Percy!" He shouted, "There's an attack!" He turned sharply to the right, the arrows that were about to sprout through his chest instead shot into his right arm, knocking him over and leaving him bleeding on the floor.
"Ian!" I shouted, running to him and slinging his good arm over my shoulders to help him up. I saw Michael and Annabeth emerge from one of the cabins, laughing.
"Watch out!" I yelled, and they turned just in time to see a harpy descend from the sky towards them. Michael's hand was out and shooting electricity as Annabeth drew her dagger, scowling.
The demigods came streaming from the Big House, the arena, and whatever was left of the cabins, not quite knowing what was going on. "Sneak attack!" I bellowed, catching their attention, "Weapons out!"
Just like that, we were locked in another battle for our lives. It was Tartarus's last resort, a sneak attack in case his raid actually failed. I handed Ian off to an Apollo camper before I heard him wail, "Percy, behind y- Wait, what? I can't see!"
This was it. The Electroclan's powers were finally failing, and in what was to be the hardest battle of their life. I gathered them and handed them all a sword. "Whose powers don't work anymore?" I asked carefully, watching them. Tara, Kylee, Nichelle, Quentin, and Torstyn raised their hands. "Alright," I continued, "Maybe if Michael zaps you one more time, it'll last. Michael?"
He zapped them, and Kylee held out a hand to Riptide, concentrating. "No," she said, frowning, "It's not working." I shook my head.
"They're finally dead," I conceded, "You all learned how to use swords. Well, not you, but just swing without hitting people, alright?" Kylee nodded, a bit disheartened. I sighed, "Or you could look out for Ian and send Will and the other Apollo kids out here." She shook her head violently.
I put my hands up, "Fine, fine. Be like that. Now, Electroclan and Eagles. We beat Hatch, we can beat this horde of monsters. I mean, how many can there possibly be?" A battle horn sounded. One that definitely wasn't from Camp Half Blood. The rumbling in the ground intensified and the clamor of roars only grew louder.
I groaned.
That was definitely the wrong thing to say.
Michael's POV
Percy ran off, and the rest of us flanked him. Ian was already down, and a good portion of the Glows had lost their powers. But I had been sparking more than ever. The volts of electricity were so strong it passed through the leather wrapping of the hilt and right down the Celestial Bronze of my blade.
I glanced down at my arms, seeing the Lichtenberg Figures that ran up and down them brighten. The rest of the Glows moved farther away from me to avoid the sparks.
The grass beneath my feet was scorched and I could see the fearful looks of not only monsters but demigods, but I felt nothing. If anything, I felt stronger. More powerful. Like I could take on Percy Jackson and win.
I only had time to blink before I saw Percy being swept off his feet by a harpy. He slashed upwards with Riptide and was sent falling to the ground. He was about twenty feet up in the air and rapidly pulling water to cushion his fall, but another harpy kicked down on him, and he landed hard on his knee.
He screamed out in pain. It was the sound of true agony. His leg was bloody and the crunching I heard on impact could not have been good for his health. I had never seen Percy like that, incapacitated with pain, and it frightened me. Suddenly, I had a rush of what I could only describe as raw courage and adrenaline.
Since we found Percy in the forest months ago, I had hung back. Percy was the experienced hero, and I was just the guy from the place no one knew. I was happy to let him lead because he could. But now he was down. Even so, I had learned a lot from him. Leadership. Bravery. How to eat five pancakes at the same time.
It was my turn to play hero.
"Abigail, Quentin, Kylee," I ordered, "Get him to the infirmary. Keep the weight off of his leg. We'll take care of the monsters." His pained screams turned into less heart-wrenching yells and I turned toward the monsters.
"Taylor, ground the ones in the air," I called, "Bryan, help her. Everyone else, we attack until there's nothing left." I charged into the horde of monsters, not even getting close before some of the weaker ones were disintegrated from the sheer force of my electricity.
The more I shot, the stronger I became, and eventually, even I couldn't see past my own light. My body couldn't feel the strain, but my mind knew something was about to happen.
"Hit the deck!" I roared. My friends and allies dove toward the ground and behind the safety of the cabins.
In that moment, something exploded within me. I heard Taylor's terrified shriek of my name and closed my eyes. Not to be pessimistic, but feeling yourself explode probably doesn't mean you'll stay alive.
I am Michael Vey. I am just a boy from Idaho. Yes, Idaho is a state, not a town. But that's beside the point. I used to go to school like you. Be bullied like you. But I was always different. I have Tourette's Syndrome and electricity running through my veins. This is how I started my story. My strange, strange story.
This is the perfect way to end it.
I am Michael Vey. I travel the world trying to stop an evil dictator from ruling it. In my time, I blew up boats, fought warriors, and made friends. At every turn, I was losing just as much as I was gaining. The opposition was always one step ahead of me. When I met Percy Jackson, and it seemed that the tide had turned.
Now I know it hadn't.
Somehow I stayed alive even through all the death that surrounded me.
That changes today.
I am Michael Vey.
And I am probably dead.
