Chapter 56
What the hell. Did my mother just turn evil right in front of me? How does that even happen? She seemed to be fighting off the beast inside her like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
I see smoke coming from a distance. Making sure I keep up my invisibility, I head over toward the smoke. I almost laugh at the thought. Most of the time now I have been walking toward danger. When reading a book I'd always criticize the stupid people who went toward danger. Especially in horror novels.
As I get closer to the smoke I start to smell fire. I exit the forest into the big clearing that held the card prison. I see it in flames with cards running out everywhere. My mother flies up top in the air, casting fireball after fireball down at the prison and the cards (now for some reason small again) that are running away. Despite how they have treated me, I can't help but feel sorry for all of them. They don't deserve this kind of treatment. Nobody deserves this kind of thing. The Ten of Clubs runs toward me barely missing a fireball from my mother. Instead of focusing on him till the Ten of Clubs dies, she continues on killing other Cardilites, not bothering with the one the escaped.
The Ten runs straight for me and before can move it crashes into me, knocking both of us to the ground. My invisibility comes off and the Ten stares at me with a crazy hate. "You! Do you even realize what you've done? You unleashed that beast into the world!"
Luckily the trees now hide us from my rampaging mother. "Beast? That's my mother you are talking about."!
"Do you not know what this is? It's the rampage. It can't be stopped."
"The rampage? Surely there is a way to stop it?" My mom can't be crazy evil forever.
The Ten sighs, looks behind him to make sure we are clear and leans a little closer to me. "Every living thing in Wonderland goes through something. Wonderland itself is an evil place. The place makes you turn evil gradually. A deep cave in the heart of the land contains the evil that the island is using to try to turn us. We've tried to stop it but it's too strong. Most of us can stop from becoming evil by doing selfish things every once in awhile. Small things that won't affect us as much and keep the evil inside of us at bay." It takes a breath from the middle of itself. "Some people are just too good though, like your mother, the Queen. She is so good. Always fighting the darkness. Never being cruel or selfish. Those people are called Rampagers. People that fight against it with all their willpower, eventually the evil being too much pressure that it explodes, causing them to lose control over mind and thought and become evil minions to the land."
The card sighs deeply. "We tried to keep her locked up. A woman came to us with the Queen after she had disappeared for 18 years, telling us the collar would keep her powers neutralized so that we could keep her here. When we saw you close by we thought you were trying to rescue her so we did everything we could to stop that. The Hearteans believe that she will never be evil. That's why we scare them away. Why we scared them away. Now that she is out and the collar is off she will wreak havoc. The only way to stop her would be for her to do such a terrible thing that it hurts her inside." The card ponders. "Like if she killed you. But we can't have her doing that. She'd be broken and would never be the same again. A shell of who she once was."
Wow. That's a lot to process. Maybe I can use this in my favour. If I get her to kill me in Wonderland just as the clock hits 48 hours then My dad and sister will be alive and my mom will be good again. She'd get over it eventually. She doesn't even know me anyways. Like losing something you never had. "Well we can't let that happen." I tell the Ten.
"Of course not. We have to find her and get her into that collar again so she can't hurt anyone else. Maybe if we can catch her sleeping we can put the collar on without any resistance." The Ten suggests. Maybe that is what happened the first time. That or she was defeated in battle but she is supposed to be the most powerful witch of all the stories according to my dad. Collect people so that we will be able to follow her wherever she goes.
"Alright then we'll have to follow her. You go and gather cardilites so that we will know wherever she is. I'll follow her now." I'm hoping the naive card will listen to me.
"Well you are her son so I guess you have her best interests at heart. I'll go do that. Be careful Jack of the Hearteans." With that he rolls off looking for other Cardilites.
I head out into the field only to realize that while I have been talking to the Ten of Clubs, my mother has destroyed the card prison and since has disappeared.
