Caleb's POV
I woke up one summer day to find the sun shining bright, not a cloud in the sky.
I decided to spend this beautiful summer day outside. So, after breakfast, I headed outside to relax.
Mom and Dad decided to both go with Annie and Hayley to their gymnastics practice and decided I would be okay home alone; after all, I am 14.
I laid out a blanket on the grass and put my basket of snacks next to me. There was a nice breeze outside, which felt nice since it was around 80 degrees outside.
I laid down on the blanket and pulled out my phone to text my friends and play a few games when all of a sudden, I heard a girl scream.
Her loud, blood curling scream filled the air.
My eyes shot up from my phone, scanning the lake. I quickly spotted a girl with a turned over boat next to her, her head and arms slowly going under the surface of the lake.
I began to panic; what should I do?! There was a girl drowning in the lake right in front of my eyes!
So I did what I had to do; I dove into the lake and swam towards the drowning girl.
Her small wooden boat was about six feet ahead of me, which wasn't too much of a far swim. When I got to her boat, I called out, "Hello? Are you here?!" Then I realized she had gone under the water, and if she was drowning, there was only such little time for me to save her.
So, I took a big breath and dove under the surface of the lake.
I swam a few feet under, my breath already running out, when I spotted her. She had her eyes closed and she was slowly drifting lower into the lake.
I quickly swam back up to get more air. If I couldn't even go three feet under water, how was I supposed to save this girl?
But at the moment, all I wanted to do was save her. So, I took another breath and swam back down.
She was sinking faster, and it almost felt like a magnet was dragging her away from me.
As I started getting closer, I felt my lungs burning, it felt like my throat was on fire. I was starting to feel lightheaded, but I pushed through it and swam harder.
Finally, I reached out my hand and weakly grabbed hers. She didn't even acknowledge my hand, which made me nervous; was she unconscious?
Once I made sure my grip was tight enough, I pushed as hard as I could to swim back up to the surface. Thankfully, she was short and light, so she wasn't too hard to pull up.
My throat was still burning, and my eyes were also starting to burn from the lake water. I got dizzier by the second, almost slipping into unconsciousness.
The light of the surface was getting closer, and I was almost out of air. I squeezed my eyes shut and pushed a little harder and finally, I was above the surface.
I coughed and started to feel a little relieved that was over, but the girl was still unconscious.
"Hello?! Oh, my god." I quickly turned her boat back over and placed her inside. This was one of those times where I felt like those summer lifeguard classes last year were worth it.
I started performing CPR on the girl in front of me when I realized she needed it. I counted thirty compressions before pinching her nostrils and placing my lips on hers, giving her air.
After a couple more tries, the girl coughed and vomited into the lake.
I felt relieved that she was awake, and I sat back in the boat to let myself calm down.
