A/N: Sorry! I've been gone for years now. This is just kind of a filler chapter because I had a kind of writers block on how to introduce Hunter, because he's kind of going to be a help later on. And because I made you wait so long, here's TWO chappies. Both shirt, but..yeah.
-------
John never looked at me with the same glare everyone else had. He was never hostile to me. I was still his best friends little girl whom he promised to protect. So when he called me into his office this morning, I wasn't surprised he was concerned about how distracted I've been.
"It's been a while, Jaime." he said, putting down a newspaper and revealing himself.
He had on a black plaid shirt and his hair was neatly combed back. His professional look made me a bit unsteady. He brushed back a few strands of hair sticking out at the from with his palm and motioned for me to take a seat.
I slowly slid into one of the comfortable chairs in front if his desk. I remember when my dad and John went shopping for these exact chairs. My dad brought me along and I sat in the shopping cart watching the two men quarrel over which shade would suit the office better.
It was weird, I remembered my dad as a man who was kind hearted and slightly insane. But that's why he needed my mom, to keep him in check from his multiple sides. I have memories of when when I was really small, my dad teaching Jake and I how to shoot an arrow in our backyard when I was barely out of diapers. Of course, Jake already knew how to shoot an arrow, so he had to rub it in my face. So I cried and clawed at a nearby tree. My mom came out of our house and told me that I'd soon be better than Jake.
It was one of those memories that gave me warm feelings but then again, made me sad. I could never see them again.
"Hi." I answered.
He slid forward and leaned on his desk. He had a toothy smile like he's never seen me before. "How are things in school?"
"It's good. The food is better." I said looking down and twiddling my fingers. "The humans aren't as annoying." I added.
"And our kind?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. he had his legs perched up on a wooden chair casually and his hands wee behind his head.
I stopped looking down at my thighs and instead looked at the view from his window. The snow started melting and soon we could welcome spring. I tried to think about something else, anything, so John wouldn't notice how my heart rate increased after he made me think of him.
"They're just..." I started and searched for the right word. "confusing."
"In what way?" he pushed on. I started to get annoyed that he wanted to know so much.
I thought about last week at the tryouts. How Derek gave mixed up signals and I don't know which to believe anymore.
When we walked out of the Pool Hall he smiled at me. It was hard to see with all the sunshine in the background making his hair glitter and his still damp body seem shiny. It was a picture perfect moment, but after what he did that day I didn't know what that smile could possibly mean. I just stared at him with his unbuttoned shirt and low waisted jeans.
"They lie a lot." I finally said. "You never know what they feel."
"It this 'they' and certain person?" he continued to ask trying to get and answer out of me. I looked downs and felt the chairs. They were really good chairs.
He dismissed the subject of school after I wouldn't answer him. It's not like anyone needs to worry about my grades. With my new found intelligence I pass my classes easily and I probably know more than the teachers themselves. This makes everyone angry at me, but I really dont care. School is pointless when your life goal is to be a warrior.
