"Wake up." I heard whispering to my ear. I could feel small cold hands grasping onto my face.
"What?" I asked groggily. I tried to open my eyes but I couldn't see anything because of tiny hand covering my eyes. "Whats happening?" I asked again.
"Happy Birthday!" I heard several shouts. I fell of my bed and and the hands where removed from my face, only to find extremly bright rays of sunlight shining on my eyes.
I was blinded and deafened by the light and the screams. All I know is that I was looking for anything to hold onto before I crash into the floor. I must have knocked down over five bottles of assorted lotions and a whole rack of trophies and awards before someone whispered a "Go help her."
I felt a hand grab onto my arm and another on my other arm. By this time I half regained my vision and my hearing was well enough to hear giggle sand whispers.
"Who are you people?" I asked still half asleep.
"I don't believe we've met, I'm Austin, only your best friend since, a while." I heard in my ear. My vision was fully back and I could see a whole bunch of kids standing in my room. Austin was holding me up. I was not dressed for company, I could tell by the peak I snuck at myself in the mirror. My hair was sticking everywhere, pajamas wrinkled and rolled up, and a cranky expression.
"Why are you people in my room?" I asked after yanking my arms free and rolling down my pajama shirt.
"It's your birthday!" yelled a kid.
"No it's not, my birthday is the twenty-sixth." I argued.
"It is the twenty-sixth." Austin argued back.
I stood there for a moment processing everything, it had already been a year? I had grown so used to the fact that Ryder wasn't home and I had to keep living my life normally, that I didn't even realize how much time passed. That means Ryder should be home! That, and also I forgot my own birthday.
After snapping out of my thoughts, I ordered everyone out my room and told them a quick meaningless thank you.
I grabbed the nearest clothes and jumped the shower.
After that, I wrestled my clothes on and ran out, not bothering to get coat or a sweater. I just ran. Jake was shouting after me, "Eat your breakfast! You mad dog!"
I ignored him and kept running. After I turned to the familiar road and took in a deep breath.
For the first time in a year, I was going to Ryder's house.
I knocked on the door and his mom answered.
"Hello, Jaime." she said kindly.
"Hi, Mrs. Toms, is Ryder home? He said he would be back home in a year, its been a year. He's supposed to be ba-" I rambled on.
"I'm sorry Jaime, Ryder isn't home yet." she interrupted.
At that moment, I was speechless. He was supposed to be home. I was given a year to wait, and I did. As patiently as I could. And after all that waiting, I was only told bad news again.
"Do you want to come inside?" she asked holding the door even more open.
I never responded, I walked out of the drive way and back home, where I would spend my birthday alone.
I slumped all the way back home.
There was a ringing nearby, I was so bummed that I didn't even realize the ringing came from my own pocket. These must have been the jeans where my phone has been hiding.
