[Elena's P.O.V]
Garrett was a troublesome guy. I wanted to help him, even if he refused the help of anyone, including myself. I was fully aware about how pushy I was being, but I felt a strange urge to keep enforcing it, as if this was the right thing to do. This feeling of entitlement, I was sure, would get me later.
"Leave me alone." He walked off, looking annoyed.
English class was going to start soon, so I had to talk to him. When the bell to third period rang, I made sure I made it to class on time. Garrett was already sitting inside, reading Hamlet.
"Hey ..." I slowly walked into class, glancing around. It was just him and I. All those times I had been clingy and annoying towards seemed to well up in moment, making me feel bad.
"What do you want?" Garrett said, not looking up and flipping through the book.
"Nothing, it's just-"
"How many times have I said it? Stop talking to me. I want nothing to do with you."
It was a lot to endure, but I wanted to endure it. I didn't want to be melodramatic, or any more annoying than I had already come across as.
"Garrett, listen I know-"
"Stop it already, will you?!" Garrett said standing up, looking furious. It was an expression that stuck in my mind.
"G-Garrett ..."
All the students started pouring into the classroom, my friends standing behind me.
"Is this douchebag bothering you, Elena?"
"Come sit with us in the third row, like we always do! You'll be away from him."
My friends led me to the third row, away from Garrett. My one chance to get close, snapped away from me.
Garrett was particularly unpleasant today, or was he always like that? I had been seeing him around, and he seemed a little different than his friends. I couldn't figure out what that was ... what made him seem a little different. When school ended, Sheila, Lora, and I planned to head out to the same café that Garrett and I went to yesterday. I packed up my bag, zipped up my jacket, and headed out. Before I left the school, I saw many teenagers, including younger ones, fighting on the turf behind the school.
I picked up my phone and called Lora; she picked up almost immediately.
"Elena, where are you? We're already waiting near the stop sign at the front."
"You and Sheila go on ahead, I forgot to do some shelving for the librarian. I'll be there soon."
I then hung up the phone, rushing downstairs to the first floor. Curiosity killed the cat, but I decided to take my chances. I needed to see what was going on. I peeked through the doors to the turf, and saw countless numbers of boys with torn shirts, ripped jeans, and spots of blood everywhere. Many people were unconscious on the ground, flooded with bruises. I know I should get a teacher to come here, but ... maybe I should wait it out. What kind of brawl was this? I saw Dylan, Lora's older brother amidst the fighting. You would never be able to tell that they are twins, since he looked a year older. That being said, he was only a few minutes older than her.
"Garrett!" I yelled as I subconsciously stepped outside. Oh crud.
Garrett, with a badly bruised face, slowly turned and faced me.
"Who's the ... girlie?" Said one of the brawlers Garrett was facing.
Garrett punched down the brawler, and slowly walked towards me. He was limping and holding his right arm, as it dripped in blood.
