Charlotte took in the giant mansion, with its dimly lit exterior and surrounding forest. She ran her hands along the ten foot wall, armed with sharp spikes at the top, that kept intruders, such as ourselves, out.
"Can't scale the wall," Charlotte mumbled, "Too high up, and these walls weren't exactly made for climbing."
"Thanks Captain Obvious," I mumbled back.
She rolled her eyes but didn't bother retorting. It was a weird feeling, almost unnatural, especially because, well you know, this is Charlotte we're talking about.
"We can't teleport either, I can't-" Charlotte froze and cocked her head to the side, watching the yard beyond the gate carefully.
"What is it?" I asked softly, squinting in the same direction of her gaze.
She shook her head. "Nothing, we can't teleport, and I have a feeling you wouldn't want to either, after the last time."
I nodded. Not wanting to feel the pain I felt the last time we teleported either. It almost felt like my guts were being ripped to shreds and pulled out of me, only to be stuffed back inside me again.
Isn't that a lovely picture?
Aren't you glad I'm your narrator?
"Alright," Charlotte said, running her hands through her hair. "I didn't want to do this, but, I'm on a schedule."
"Wait," I frowned, slightly confused, "Do what?"
"Go stand behind something," she said, not taking her eyes off the large black gate that separated us and the mansion. I opened my mouth to protest but couldn't bring myself to say anything and soon found myself hiding behind a large tree, peering along the side to watch her.
Charlotte's eyes glazed over and hair glowed, turning from a subtle brown to a deep rich red, that turned lighter every minute. Till her all her wavy strands were burning bright red like flames, whiping wildly despite the air being so still.
Boy do I sound poetic right now.
This is some Shakespearean shit right here.
I like to change things up every now and then. Makes this narrating thing less boring.
I watched as Charlotte moved towards the gate, her gaze still fixed on the solid structure.
I mean jeez, it's not going anywhere.
Charlotte raised a hand to the gate, and almost instantly, the bright red colours in her hair moved to her palm, that took on the same firey red glow. A distortion surrounded Charlotte and the gate, almost like the same thing you'd see near a hot fire. Although I couldn't feel anything but cold.
The gates bars quickly withered and melted, leaving a large hole big enough for both us of to pass through. Charlotte's hair and hands lost their glow immediately returning to their normal tan tone, only this time, a shade paler.
I wondered how that was possible.
Charlotte glanced back at me and signalled me over. I blinked twice, not quite sure if what I had seen was real.
It can't be real right? She did not just produce metal-melting heat from her hands.
Right?
I sat down on the grass for a few minutes blinking wildly. My thoughts were in a daze as Charlotte approached me. "I have a schedule to keep," she said softly, "we better get moving."
I blinked up at her, "How did you-"
"Like I said Hayden, I'm Karma."
