“You're insecure,
Don't know what for,
You're turning heads when you walk through the door” - What Makes You Beautiful, One Direction
Lorin
That's what makes you beautiful, I finish. My mum smiles at me.
Beautiful, Lorin, she signs. I smile widely. My mum is the sweetest lady on earth, in my humble opinion. She's put up with me, after all.
I've been deaf since I was born. And I know what you're thinking. Poor girl, she never even knew what it was like to hear. But you can't miss something you never had, right?
I just finished showing her What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction. It's got to be my favorite song of theirs.
Mum, the contest! I sign. I run over to the computer. I know she's following me a bit more slowly, smirking to herself. Even if I can't hear her, I know everything about my mum. I know her better then my dad did.
I log into the fansite, and click on my message box. Nothing. I resist the urge to sign something very rude. I didn't win.
I entered a contest a month ago, to win tickets to a One Direction concert. They've got to be my favorite band ever. Their music is pretty great, it's really fast and upbeat. I can feel the vibrations of the music if it's loud enough, and I listen to them all the time.
Mum taps me on the shoulder. I turn to look at her. Did you win? she asks.
No. I pout. Mum pats me on the back.
Maybe next time, she signs. I'm a contest junkie, honestly. I enter every single one of these things. I haven't won yet, but it's only a matter of time. I hope.
We don't have enough money for me to actually afford a ticket. We haven't had enough money since my dad died. He died when I was ten, he was in the police and he was killed in action. And mum just found a job last month.
Yeah. They have another one tomorrow, I tell Mum, referring to yet another contest. She smiles.
Enter!
Of course! I reply. She laughs.
I hope you win, she signs. I'm going to make dinner. What do you want?
Ice cream! I sign back, laughing. She frowns playfully at me.
How about carrots? She asks, a grin on her face. It's my turn to frown at her.
You know I hate carrots, I sign. I want chicken.
Ok, she replies. Chicken it is. She leaves, probably to go and make it, and I turn back to my computer. It's not really mine. My best friend, Emmett, gave it to Mum. His family was getting rid of it. He's deaf as well, and he goes to my school. We're the only two deaf people there, and neither of us talk, so we're a perfect match. I swear, everyone expects us to get married someday. I would just like to point out that deaf people and hearing people can get along. My other best friend can hear perfectly fine, her name is Zoe. She's learning sign language, but I can read lips, and I can just write down what I want to say to her.
