Backstory

"In the year 2357, a disease wiped out 1/4 of Earth's population. Of those who survived the initial disease, 2 out of 100 people died soon after. Some of those who survived were warped beyond recognition and some appeared the same but were really mentally broken. An ambitious young woman by the name Cortana rose to power from the ashes of the broken world, bringing with her a life-changing medicine, promising immunity from the dangerous disease and its mutated beasts. However, it came at a price. Those who took the medicine must defer to her as their Ultimate Leader, for life. They also must offer their children into the Choosing. It wasn't a choice, and the moment you took the medicine, your choices were all taken from you. Every 8 years, for 8 is an auspicious number in Japan, Cortana's home base, a 15-year-old male, and a 15-year-old female are chosen for The Process. The Process dictates that the children must be 15 years old at the choosing, and must be at least 6 months away from their birthday and that their families are to receive money, fame, and good fortune for a year. It is unknown to the general public and most 'officials' as to what The Process is, but the rumors that circulate talk about strange half animal, half human creatures coming out of The Process..."                                                                                                                           -Excerpt from The Book Of History
