"So, did you just move here?" My mother asked as she set her plate down on the kitchen table. Andy nodded his head, patting his lips with his napkin as he swallowed. "Yes my parents and I moved her last November, but they didn't want to start me in the middle of a semester."
"Ah so you're behind?" My Mom asked.
"'Mom." I hissed.
"No. I took courses online to catch up."
My mom looked surprised but nodded her head, offering a light smile. I looked over at him and furrowed my brows. We'll talk about it later tonight. I jumped a bit, and my mother looked over at me, asking if I was okay.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a chill." I said, glaring at Andy who held back a laugh as he continued to eat. I was never going to get used to the whole mind talking thing.
Stop doing that. I thought. I wasn't sure if we could actually have a conversation like this or not. Apparently, we could.
Ah, you're learning new tricks?
So I can talk to you like this? I asked.
Andy nodded his head, and I wiggled my brows at him, giving a sly grin. Andy choked on his food as he laughed, and grabbed his glass of water and drank. We were halfway through with our project but soon got distracted and decided to watch a movie. When we heard my mother call us upstairs, he threw his sleeves down and I tossed a sweatshirt on.
"How's your steak?" My mother asked.
"It's delicious, thank you." Andy replied.
"Mom, how was the gym?"
"It was fine. We went out for lunch after. How far are you on the project?" She asked, looking at both of us. We both looked at each other and shrugged, tilting our heads a bit. "Uh, I'd say we're about halfway done."
"Mm, I'm sure you two got pretty far sitting on the couch watching a movie." I choked on my food and my mother gave a sly grin, shaking her head slowly. Andy covered his mouth and I quickly said, "Mom we just took a break."
"Mm, a break." She teased.
My cheeks heated up and Andy started to laugh at me, covering his mouth with his napkin. My mother glanced at him and couldn't help but laugh with him, and my embarrassment was rising. I shoveled down my food and took my plate to the kitchen sink, listening to them laugh.
I started the water and cleared the plate of the leftover food into the garbage. Andy slid his plate into the sink as well. He leaned over me and I elbowed him in the rib, shooing him away. He laughed and went back to the table to help clean up. I heard my mother protest but he insisted, and she finally let him.
It was all going so well until— crash!
I spun around quickly, eyes wide. My mother clamped her hand over her mouth as she looked at the broken plate on the floor. I quickly rushed over to her to help.
"Mom, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." She said.
"Miss Baker, let me help." Andy insisted, getting down on his knees. He reached out to pick up the broken fragments but my mother slapped at his hands, shaking her head.
