Three Days Later...

I can't sleep, I can't eat, and it's like I can't live without her.

I can't handle this not without Dixie.

I haven't had no calls or anything from the fuzz.

I skipped work today to go talk to them.

"Dadda, where awe we gowing?" I said, "You'll see, hunny."

Before going to the sheriff's department, I decided to take her to the Curtis house where she will be safe for now.

I can't risk her safety at our house as well.

As soon as we got to the Curtis home, I left Champ in the car, and I picked up Sabrina bringing her right inside the house.

Darry was the first to see us. He said, "Two-bit, I heard about Dixie, is she ok?"

I said, "Yeah, she's fine. She has to be fine, right?"

He looked at his parents who came in from the kitchen.

Mrs. Curtis said, "Two-bit, is everything ok?"

I gave Sabrina to Mr. Curtis and said, "Watch her, please. Until I find Dixie."

My eyes began to water just saying her name, but I blinked back the tears.

I can't bawl right in front of my gang. Not at this moment in time.

Sabrina didn't mind.

In a few years, she will probably forget me and Dixie because she's so small.

Her memory's not strong enough to remember her actual parents.

Mr. Curtis nodded his head and said, "We will watch her don't worry, Two-bit, we will watch her until you find out Dixie is ok."

I nervously scratched the back of my neck. UNTIL why is everyone saying UNTIL she's ok.

I said, "Dixie is fine, she has to be fine. She will be fine. She will come back home, and everything will go back to normal."

They both looked at each other.

Soda and Pony were just going down the stairs.

It hurt to see all of them looking at me in pity so I just ran out.

As I got in the car, I slammed my hands on the dash.

I looked at the window and yelled her name.

Looking down at myself, I thought where are you Dixie?

My sudden of outburst obviously scared Champ.

These past couple of days he could tell something was wrong, and I think he was missing her to.

Before anyone could come outside to ask me what happened, I drove off to the sherrif's office in hope.

Arriving at the Office...

As soon as I pulled up, I ran inside with Champ.

I told the front office lady that I needed to see Officer Jacob right away.

She told me the directions and where to go for his office, so I walked all the way to see him.

He didn't even get the chance to say anything.

I sat down and said, "Please, tell me you have found her. Evidence, clues, anything?"

He said while typing in on his computer, "I'm sorry Mr. Mathews, but this is a hard investigation to crack. Men are out there working on it as we speak. She didn't leave any evidence to her disappearance at all."

I said, "Jacob, do you have a wife?"

He said, "I'm married to my job."

I said, "What if you were fired?"

He didn't say anything, he just kept typing on his keyboard.

I looked at him with a helpless look.

I said, "Officer Jacob!" His eyes widened while looking onto his keyboard.

I said, "What, what is it?"

He said, "Officer Naomi has just found a body on your street a couple blocks from it, in a garbage bin."

As he was getting up to go hunt on the investigation, I said, "That isn't her, officer, she wasn't killed. She's still alive."

He turned back to me and said, "And Mr. Mathews, how do you know that?"

I watched as he left his office with me still sitting down.

A body? No, it isn't her. It can't be her.

She has to be ok, we have to get through this.

We're supposed to grow old together, and die together.

She can't be dead, not right now.

Hours had passed when Officer Jacob left to go dig out the body.

I sat in his office.

...Broken...

As he slowly walked in the officer, I jumped out of my seat.

He was carrying a couple bags of items and many papers.

He said, "We couldn't tell if it was her, Mr. Mathews, many people die on your street everyday."

I said hopeful, "Yes, they do. Many many many people."

He continued, "But we have found a couple items here that was on the body."

I prayed Don't let it be Dixie's items, don't let it be hers. He pulled out the first bag.

It was a necklace that could have been anyone's.

In this situation, I didn't recognize it.

I shook my head no.

He pulled out his second bag which was a bracelet.

It looked like the one Sabrina had in her mouth the night of the crime.

I said, "I've never seen it before in my life."

He said, "Ok, and what about....this?"

The third bag he pulled out contained a wedding ring.

Her wedding ring.

Tears filled my eyes as I held it tightly.

He said, "So, it was Dixie?"

He pulled the first paper off the stack and read outloud, "Dixie Mathews, she was sexually assaulted many times, abused for three days, and burned to death. She has been buried in her own hometown a couple of blocks away from her uncle's house."

I let out a sorrowful sob.

He sat there watching me totally losing it.

I got up with her wedding ring, and walked out of there.

Never looking back.

I grabbed Champ leading him into the car. This can't be happening.

As soon as I got home, I let Champ out of the car and basically dragged myself inside.

I went to our room and found a gun. A gun I was going to use for any intruders or in case of an emergency.

I took the gun and looked at it. I thought there's nothing to live for now.

I slowly pointed the gun to my head, easily putting my finger up to the trigger and...
