Chapter 24 - Promises

SYDNEY GREY

Sydney was on her second beer by the time Sean came home. He flung his jacket on the armchair next to the sofa which she had occupied.

His eyes fell on her and he jumped back, startled.

"Gosh. You scared me."'

"Yeah it was funny.' she said with no signs of a smile on her face.

"What are you doing here?"

"Well, we are dating right? Since I don't have a place of my own, I thought I'd crash on your sofa.

"That is gonna be quite uncomfortable. You take the bed if you want, I can crash here. I'm not gonna get any sleep anytime soon." He said as he walked towards the kitchen.

Sydney just watched him go. She loved his apartment. It was no big condo like the one Logan and Dave had. The living room was spacious enough. Redwood floors, beige walls. Plain brown sofa with a few cushions and two armchairs on which he flung his jcaket every single time.

A state of the art kitchen with marble counters and wooden cabinets. And a bedroom with one bed, a small walk in closet and a TV with a home theater system. and a shelf full of CD's.

Sean walked back in with a glass decanter and a glass with ice.

"You're still here." he stated and sat down.

Bags under his eyes proved that he hadn't been sleeping well.

"How's Monisha?"

"She's fine." he answered as he dropped down on one of the armchairs and placed the decanter and his glass on the glass coffee table.

She took a swig from the bottle and just watched him pour himself a drink.

 "When did you come back?"

 "Good"

An uncomfortable silence settled between them. Sydney didn't know what to say.

Luckily Sean decided to break the ice.

"We are not good for each other."

"Yeah." she agreed

"Why do we come back to this then?"

Sydney contemplated on what he said and took her words back. She placed the bottle on the

"We are good together. The problem is communication. We don't talk sweetheart. We never did. The sex is amazing, the date was amazing too. Thank you for that. And we love each other but we have a lot of things between us that we've never talked about."

"Like Logan?"

"Yes, like Logan, Monisha, us, future."

"And miscarriage." Sean added

Sydney stiffened. She coughed on the sip she had just taken as it went in the wrong pipe.

Sean settled beside her and patted her back as she coughed.

 "I'm fine." she said.

"Sure you are." he muttered but didn't let go.

Once the coughing fit subsided she settled in the crook of his arm as he refused to let her go.

"Who told you?"

"Monisha."

Sydney fowned, "How did she even know?"

"She's smart." Sean answered. "What happened Syd?"

Whe she tried to wiggle out of his hold, Sean grabbed her shoulder and refused to let her go.

"You're going nowhere. We need to talk. Just like you said we have a lot of things between us and I want to make us work. I love you and I don't want to let you go, you hear me."

He took a sip and looked at her straight in the eyes. "I'm going nowhere. I've let you down so many times but not any more. I want you to know I'm here. Right here, with you. Forever."

Sydney saw the honesty in his eyes and couldn't stop the tears that sprang up in hers.

"I'm sorry." she apologised as she burrowed her face in his chest.

"I don't think there is anything you have to be sorry about. It's all my fault."

"Can we talk about something else. I need just a bit of time before I tell you about it."

"Fine. Let's talk about Logan then."

"That we can do."

"Why did you lie?"

"I  never lied"

"You said he is like a brother to you. That you'd never marry him. But you didn't tell me anything about the contract. That you agreed to it."

She sighed "In my defense, I thought you knew about the contract since everybody did. I'm sorry that if you felt that I was hiding it from you. I wasn't. And i would never marry him. I did agree to it because I trust him. He came through for me every single time, okay. He looks after me just like he looks after you and Dan. Also, I don't think you read the contract. There were two conditions. Not only Logan has to get the company back to what it was but we had to find a person for ourselves. Even if just one of us marry and gets settled in a year, the deal was off."

And suddenly it made sense. Because Nolan Grey wouldn't have backed out just because Lexi decided to turn her grandfather's home into a resort. It was because Logan found himself a girl and he had fulfilled the condition.

"Now Monisha. Did you lie." she said shaking him out o his reverie.

"No I didn't. Monisha was in trouble. Her family locked her up. I had to save her or they would have done god alone knows what with her. They are a bunch of monsters. She needs me, Syd. I'm sorry but I can't choose between you both."

"That's fine. I understand since I had the same connection with Logan. " She said and something came over her as she grabbed his neck and placed a possessive kiss on his lips. " But I didn't sleep with Logan like you did with her. As long as it is platonic I'm fine."

"Platonic. Completely platonic" he agreed as she proceeded to kiss his neck.

"You know what, enough talking."

"Yeah" he groaned.

Picking her up he walked towards the bed. Within moments they stripped of their clothes but Sean slid beneath the covers and pulled her close.

"No sex?"

"Nope. Tonight I just wanna hold you."

Sydney couldn't help but smile. She placed a kiss on his chest where his heart beat in a rhythm similar to hers.

She fell asleep listening to his soothing heart beat.

With one last thought she fell asleep, that in all these years, even though they had sex a lot of times, she never felt as intimate and as close to him as she felt right there drifting to sleep in his arms.
