The rain fell in endless sheets outside Margo Owens window. Small drops peppered the glass, making a beautiful collage as they seemed to bend the fading lights outside. A small smirk appeared on her face when she considered taking a picture of it. She would, if she didn't already have thirty just like it saved to her computer.
The earbuds blaring music blocked out everything except for the thing they were supposed to block out, the sound of Margo's brother screaming at their father. They were always fighting about something. The sound was easily heard in Margo's room, even though she was a floor away. The house, unfortunately, was very thin walled.
Thunder boomed and lightning flashed, causing a young tabby cat, which was perviously lying on Margo's pillow to jump under her bed. Margo payed no notice as her attention was focused on the land beyond her room.
It wasn't the loud ringing of her phone which brought Margo out of her music filled trance, but the vibrating, as she was loosely holding her phone. A ridiculous picture of her best friend brought a half hearted smile to her face.
"Look who remembered they had a best friend," she laughed into the phone. Margo could hear traffic on the other side of the line.
"I'm really sorry, but I can't talk for long," Betty Cooper sighed apologetically. "I have this thing, but I wanted to talk to you. My life doesn't feel right without your sarcasm every five seconds."
"Forget the thing I said about remembering us being best friends, folks."
"Folks?" Betty laughed.
"Best friends actually communicate, not quickly catch up every so often. I demote you to acquaintance. If you're lucky, you can get back up to distant friend." Lightning lit up the sky, illuminating a lone, soaking figure walking through the storm. "Some idiot is out in the rain. How is the weather where ever you are?"
"You call yourself my best friend, but you don't know where I am."
"First of all, I know you are at some internship, I just don't know where. Second, I call myself a distant friend, if not acquaintance."
"It's really sunny, which is great, but it's so hot. It's so different here from Riverdale."
"You mean there are actual people there?" Margo asked and Betty snorted.
"The rain sounds bad over there." An angry voice screamed something which Margo couldn't make out. She wasn't sure if it was her brother or father, as their voices were similar. She could hear her mother's sharp voice saying something and the yelling ceased.
"They're going at it again?" Betty asked, sympathetically. The reason that the two girls were such close friends was because they both knew about messed up home lives. They became friends in third grade when Margo came to school and fell asleep during first period math, they were learning long division, so it was unsurprising that she fell asleep. Her older brother failed three vocabulary tests in a row which led to a fight all night. The fight included their father throwing Mitch's video games and game console on the floor and Mitch punching and breaking his window. It was Betty, who was one of her table partners who nudged Margo awake. It caused a budding friendship, but they really came together when Betty came to school with tear stains on her cheek. Her mother claimed that Betty was too old for her blanket and threw it out. They became best friends because Margo comforted her rather than laughing like many of the other kids did.
