It was the incessant beeping which woke Margo up. Her alarm blared, when all she wanted to do was sleep more. She thanked the God of Snooze Buttons as she allowed herself to go back to her dream.
The beeping was back and it did not feel like she got ten minutes. Margo was thankful that she left out her clothes for the next day because she could not deal with having to pick out an outfit. Exhaustion made her unable to do anything that involved deciding things for the first hour after she woke.
Breakfast was a quick piece of toast, so she wouldn't have to spend too much time in her house, before she was out the door.
A side affect of being a sophomore and parents who aren't so fond of her was that Margo had to bike to school every morning. She didn't have anything against biking as it kept her in shape, but she had to bike even when it rained or snowed. Mitch was no help, even though he could drive, as he was always late. Margo was trying to be a perfect as possible so she would be able to get out of RIverdale for college.
The bike ride to school wasn't bad, it wasn't too hot and the traffic wasn't that hectic, so the ride was quick and Margo arrived at her school earlier than needed. Betty was there as usual, as her mother was more anal than anyone else about success.
The two sat on the picnic benches outside the school while people began to roll up. It was only when Kevin arrived when they moved inside.
"My mother is insane," Betty sighed as the trio pushed their way through the crowds. Margo believed that the hallways were strategically just small enough to make people feel claustrophobic so they would go to class.
"Aren't all mothers?" Kevin asked.
"Kev, you don't have one," Margo pointed out. "How would you know? But, yes." They reached their lockers. One of the reasons that Betty and Kevin were so close was because they had neighboring lockers. That was what started their friendship. Margo's locker was across the crowded hall, so it was like they weren't even near each other. "I'll be right back." And she voyaged through the sea of people. She dropped her books in her locker and prodded Archie, after walking to his locker a few paces away.
"What's that?" She nodded to the notebook in his hands.
"A song. Shit, here comes Reggie." He quickly closed the notebook as Reggie appeared.
"Bro, you are ready for football." His naturally deep voice was easily heard in the noisy hall. "Margo, what up?"
"Nothing much, Reg. See you," she said to Archie and made her was back to where Betty and Kevin were standing. A plus of being in charge of the sports section of the yearbook was that Margo knew most of the sports players. She and Reggie formed a friendship when he almost knocked her out while she was taking pictures of a football practice.
"I need to get to the office. I'm giving that girl from yesterday, Veronica, a tour," Betty said upon Margo's arrival.
"Good luck," Margo muttered and headed off to class as the bell rang shrilly through the narrow corridors.
