The next morning we got ready for school in silence. The drive was odd and seemed longer than usual. Before we got out of the car Lucy looked at me.
"Can we try to get back to how things used to be?" She asked.
"Oh, you mean before you cheated on me? Sure why not?" I answered sarcastically.
"I really am sorry Primrose, but at the time I really didn't see it as cheating. Not until things got out of hand and I saw how much it hurt you."
I got out of the car.
"So are we just not going to try and get through this?" Lucy asked.
I kept walking because I just don't have the energy to argue right now. I shouldn't have let things happen the way they did last night. I don't know what I was thinking. When we got to first hour everyone was kind of staring at Lucy. Then finally the teacher walked in and said "Oh Lucy, congratulations on your prom queen nomination."
"My what?" Lucy replied seeming just as confused as I am.
There was a slight laughter throughout the class after her reaction.
"You weren't expecting it?"
"Well no, I mean no one told me they were nominating me and I don't see why anyone would want to."
"I do, your grades and attendance are exceptional. You're a really great student Lucy and I think you have a really good chance of winning."
Lucy then came and sat down next to me.
"What the hell?" Lucy asked me.
"I don't know, I was just about to ask you the same thing." I pulled out my phone and went to the school's Facebook page. There was a list of four prom queen and king nominations. I wasn't very familiar with any of the guys but there is one other queen nomination Lucy and I knew quite well.
"Oh you've got to be shitting me," Lucy said when she saw Sam's name on the list.
"She had to have had something to do with this." I inferred.
"But why?"
"Maybe she wants to embarrass you by winning or something I guess, I don't know how girls like that think." Sam has been our class president for the third consecutive year in a row. She's very smart, social, and popular but she's also a full-time bitch to everyone she thinks is beneath her. We haven't even spoken to her since that horrible article she wrote about us in the student news report last semester.
"Do you think we should try to talk to her about it?"
"No, there's really no point. Just let her be the little brat she is. Plus we don't have time to worry about that. We both work today and tomorrow, and prom is this Friday."
It seemed like Lucy was bothered by this throughout the day. We decided to go to my house and try on the dresses after the last bell rang. Once we were in the dresses we looked in the full body mirror and admired how one another looks in the dresses.
"We almost look like twins," said Lucy with a slight laugh.
"When are we going to get accessories?" I asked.
"We could probably look around before work today, we still have a couple hours."
I like that idea, once we were out of the dresses we went ahead and changed into our work clothes.
"Did you see that?" asked Lucy suddenly looking towards the door to my room which was cracked. I stepped out and looked both ways down the hall.
"No, my mom's not here either," I replied.
Lucy stood there in deep thought for a moment.
"Did you dream last night?" I asked. Lucy looked at me already knowing what I was leading up to.
"I always dream, and yes I saw her. We spoke for a little while but it's still the same, she refuses to leave me alone."
"Did you have a restless night?"
"Yeah sort of, but I'm getting used to it."
"You see her in reality?"
"I know that can't be possible Primrose," Lucy replied in frustration.
I know she doesn't mean to, I can only imagine how haunting this must be for her. I decide to drop the subject and we head to the mall. We got our jewelry from Claire's and our heels from Macy's. Lucy seemed to be distracted the whole time. We got to work just in time. It's kind of slow now but I doubt that'll last long. People want coffee all hours of the night, especially Starbucks. Lucy and I almost always work the same days. I'm working the front counter today and she's mainly in the drive thru. About half way through our shift some students from our school come in. It's a group of four girls and at first, I don't look close because I'm wiping off the counters. Then I see a mean look on Lucy's face.
"What's wrong?" I ask her.
Before she can give me an answer I hear a young woman's voice from over the counter begin to speak to us.
