The sound of my alarm was dreadful although I am kind of looking forward to today. I rushed and got ready so that I can pick up Lucy for school. When she got in she places a kiss on my cheek and told me good morning.
"I see you're in a good mood."
"I'm trying to be," she said with a forced smile.
"How did you sleep?"
"I slept."
"I know what that means."
"I'm fine, I promise"
"So what does she say to you even though she knows you want nothing to do with her?"
"The same really, she just haunts my dreams telling me she loves me and I'm never going to live without her, but I know that's not true. I have an idea in mind, I just can't share it with you until I've got it all thought through."
"Just let me know if you need some help, okay?" I said making sure I'd get a response, but Lucy just nodded.
The days seem to drag by slower and slower. Come lunchtime a group of girls was going around the cafeteria showing off their nails and hairstyles, still trying to convince more people to come to prom last minute. As the last bell rings Lucy and I make our way down the hall and I take a peep into the counselor's office. There's the prom committee looking stressed out as ever with white and blue bags of balloons everywhere.
"Well this is going to be interesting," Lucy said with a sarcastic tone peeping in the office with me.
"I'm sure they'll be fine and it'll turn out great."
Lucy caught me by surprise when we were heading to my house, "hey do you think you could drop me off home after I grab my dress from your house?"
"Um yeah. I kind of thought we were hanging out together until it's time to get ready for prom though."
"Yeah, me too but something came up at the house and I've got to be there, I'll tell you all about it when you pick me up."
"Just take the car, I don't feel like driving anymore."
I left the keys in the ignition and went to my room. Lucy quickly followed and put her dress back in the plastic cover.
"I'll be here to pick you up about an hour early so we can go get pictures taken."
"Okay."
The three hours from three to six flew by. I had just finished my hair, nails, and makeup when the doorbell rang.
"Mom, can you get that?" I shouted down the hall.
"Yeah yeah, I got it," she yelled back up.
I know it's Lucy and we will now officially be late because I'm still scrambling around my room trying to get in my dress and all my accessories. When I finally made my way downstairs to the living room, there stood Lucy in her identical dress. Everything about us is identical except for our physical bodies. Our deep blue slightly sparkling lipstick matches the line of blue in our also sparkling black dresses. When I finally take my eyes off how beautiful she looks, I see that she is holding two deep blue corsages that are almost the identical blue in our dresses.
"Wow Lucy," I say in almost a whisper. She then takes one of them out and places it around my wrist. Meanwhile, my mom is like the paparazzi over there getting all of this on video and snapping pictures as well. She then hands me the other one, gestures towards her wrist and I put it on. We pose for my mom to snap a couple more photos and Lucy leads the way to our car. Once we got to the photo shop we were surprisingly in and out. It didn't take us long to pick out some backgrounds and the pictures printed out quickly. Despite my horrible management of time, we arrived at prom right at seven as they were opening the doors. A group of kids swarmed inside and we followed right behind them. It is very dimly lit here at prom in this event center. As we look up we notice the beautiful chandeliers hanging which were providing our light. The first song played it is very popular and upbeat. About twenty to thirty minutes later, I look around and realize that mostly everyone is here by now. Nobody has really started dancing yet I'm assuming because they haven't played any group dance songs yet. This graduating class can be so lame at some points. Then finally they played one and Lucy shot me a look.
"I don't think so," I said already knowing what she was about to say.
"Oh come on it's prom," she replied.
Lucy stood up and gave me her hand, I reluctantly took it. We then went out to the floor with the majority of the class. I'll have to admit I'm having some fun. Lucy and I keep looking at each other and laughing because we know both of us hate dancing, especially in public. After that, they played a slow song. Everyone coupled up including Lucy and I. My hands on her shoulders and her hands on my waist we locked eyes for what felt like forever. Once again, we're communicating without saying a word at all. I finally hold her close and say, "I love you, Lucy."
"I love you too Primrose." she replied.
For the rest of the dance, we held each other close. I didn't want it to end. When it did, we heard one of the students on prom committee speaking on the microphone.
"Attention please, senior class! If you will, we'd like to have everyone's attention please." she paused for a moment and continued once it was completely quiet. "Thank you. At this moment prom is halfway over and we'd like to go ahead and announce the Prom King and Queen!" That brought up a loud woot and applaud. "If I can have the nominees come to the stage please," she then named off all the king nominees followed by the queen.
"Lucy you must go, they've called your name."
Lucy shot me an almost worried look, "I don't feel so good about this Primrose."
"I'll be right here the whole time, what's the worst that could happen?"
Lucy was the last to finally make her way to the stage. All the girls were in a line standing side by side and so were the boys on the other side of the stage. My heart is kind of racing at this point and I can tell by the look on Lucy's face, she just wants to get the hell out of here.
"And now, for the moment that everyone's been waiting for. Your senior class Prom King is Derrick, and your Queen is Lucy!
"Oh damn," I whisper.
