Chapter 4
Jonas was quickly rushed off the bus and separated from Lily when they got to the orphanage. He was examined by various doctors and given a sheet of paper with a room number and a small schedule. He was whisked away with a group of other teenage boys then placed in a room containing three bunk beds, a large chest at the end of the beds and two desks pressed against two parallel walls. There was six boys so each one had a bed but every two boys had to share a chest for clothing.
Jonas got top bunck of the bed closes to the door. The bed was pushed right against the walls so Jonas saw that they where plain white and clearly he saw some old boys had written on the walls. He read one it read,
Heaven has gained a angel Dec, 14th 2007- Macey Wells died.
Jonas grew even more frightened by that message written on the thin plaster walls. He didn't know if he would even survive here on his own without Victoria or his dad. Jonas and the others quickly turned their heads when they heard the sound of loud footsteps coming towards their door. The weak wooden door shot open and reveal a large scary man with a list in his hands. He read a series of names Jonas was one of them.
A Small group of four boys where marched into a tiny plaster room with ten little school desks and a chalkboard up in front of the desks. There was no posters on the walls and just one window the ceiling lights where the only things giving the room light.
"Find a seat and sit down!" barked the large man. Jonas sat down in a seat next to a boy with a broken leg and black eye.
"My name is Jay Newmann, you will address me as sir." Sir started to pace around the room.
"This is where you will learn Mathematics, Language, History and Science. You will report here every morning at eight o'clock no later the punishment for being tarty is bathroom duty after three strikes you will be permanently placed there until you leave. I expect all homework I assign to be completed if you fail to do this you will be given extra homework and a essay assignment no questions asked. There will be no talking, no excuses, no eating and no talking back." Sir stopped talking and faced Jonas.
"You stand up front and center!"
Jonas did as told.
"Name?"
"Jonas King, Sir."
"Jonas King how did your parents die?" Sir showed no concern what so ever about Jonas's feelings and stared at him waiting for a answer. Jonas was dumbfounded at the question he was just asked.
"My mother died when I was seven and my father is still alive, Sir."
"Then Jonas King why are you here if your dad is still alive?"
"I do not know Sir." Jonas's voice cracked when he answered.
"Mr King this is a orphanage do you know what a orphanage is used for?" Sir started pacing in front of Jonas.
"Yes, Sir."
"Then I will ask again why are you here?" Sir was right in Jonas's face now.
"I don't know why I'm here Sir." Jonas's voice was small and faint now.
"Did your dad throw you in here? Or give you away? Because if he did you're in the wrong class Jonas King." Sir grabbed Jonas by the arm and dragged him out of the room Jonas held onto his crutches as he was dragged.
Sir dragged Jonas not caring for his well being at all up to a door marked unwanted. Jonas stared at the door in disbelief. Sir knocked no the fated wooden door some paint fell off the door. A old man with a long shirt on and worn out pants opened the door.
"Take this he is unwanted." Sir threw Jonas on the ground into the old man's room. Jonas struggeled to get up and when he did he was shocked to see five beds and four childeren.
"Welcome to the Unwanteds boy." the old man pointed to the children and went to the fridge to get a beer.
"By default you get that bed." the old man waved his hand in the direction of a small single bed in the corner of the room while sticking his head in the fridge.
"My name's Hermit by the way." Jonas made his way to the rusty brass bed and sat down. A girl looking around his age came up to him.
"Hey I'm Cammy." Cammy held out her hand. Jonas took it.
"I'm Jonas where are we?"
"This is the room specially for the children that where abandoned by their parents. We come out last for adoption and work like the adults do."
"Why are treated like this?"
"Their concept is that if we were abandoned by the ones that should love us most no one else will ever love us again."
"My dad didn't die and he didn't abandon me! I am here by mistake why won't anyone listen!" Jonas banged his crutch against the wall. Hermit pocked his head out of the fridge took a swing of beer and marched over to Jonas.
"What have you done! Look you dented my wall!"
"I don't care, my father didn't abandon me you have to let me out please!" Jonas begged.
"Sit down boy and shut up!" Hermit pushed Jonas down on his bed and mumbled random swears at Jonas as he walked away.
