NINE

I waited for Jared in the library the next morning to discuss with him the things I have found out. Before he could arrive, I decided to look for books that might help. I brought them on top of the table and read them. It’s all the same. Nothing new. I sighed. Suddenly, I heard the door opened and saw Jared came in.

“So what’s up, Sam? Hettie said that you asked to see me.” He said, referring to one of the maids.

“I wanted to discuss with you something.” I said to him. He sat down beside me then grabbed one of the books and scanned the pages.

“What? Did you found something?” he asked.

“Yeah. Well, not really but it intrigues me.” I said. “Did you know that Lucifer’s first son was half-angel, half-demon?”

“You mean, Victor? Everyone knows that already.” He said.

“Isn’t it curious? About the ‘abomination’, I mean.” I said to him.

“Sam, what’s so curious about that? Almost everyone knows about it.” He said. He leaned down his chair, apparently bored.

“Why do you think they killed him?”

“Because they don’t like our blood to be mixed with an angel’s blood. It’s just pure disgust towards the enemies.” He answered.

“It’s not just that. It’s because they’re afraid that this abomination might cause our defeat.” I said to him.

“And where did you heard that?” he asked.

“I read it on one of the books.” This time he leaned against the table. He seemed interested now. “They think that the mixture of blood between the two creatures will result to a much stronger creature which might be our strongest opponent.”

“Did they have proof?” he asked, raising his eyebrow. He didn’t seem to believe.

            “I don’t know.” I said softly.

“You know what Sam, instead of thinking about those things, you should be preparing.” He said.

“Prepare for what?” I asked, confused.

“The ball, idiot. Don’t tell me you forgot that? It’s your big day, you know.” He said, reminding me. Right, the ball. I almost forgot about that. And it’s going to be in three days. Three days! I didn’t realized that time was running too fast.

“You’re right.” I sighed. “But I’ll still research on this.” He rolled his eyes and chuckled then grabbed a book.

After a few hours of reading, we decided to stop. I was on my way to my room when I heard faint voices at the end of the staircase. I stopped at the bottom then hid behind a wall to eavesdrop.

“Nicholas, when will you start to search that gate you were talking about?” I heard a man’s voice said.

“Soon. In the meantime, I’ll prepare Samantha for it.” Father said.

“Make it sure that this plan of yours will work.” The other said in a low voice.

“Don’t worry, William. I’ll make sure Samantha will do it right.”
