THIRTEEN

It has been two days since he captured me. All I’ve done was sitting in a dark corner of the cell as I eat the food he gave me. I keep thinking that I should approach him and talk to him but he seems to be distracted and was always away. There were times when I think of my father back home and would plan on escaping but then I couldn’t. No matter how worried I am of my father, I know I have some business here. I needed to confront him.

The sunlight streamed inside the cell, which meant that the sun was already high up. The door suddenly threw open and I saw Nathaniel coming in with a tray of food in his hands. He placed it on the floor near me and without a word, he turned his back and walked away.

            “Wait!” I suddenly blurted out.

He stopped in the middle of the room but he didn’t turn back to look at me. He just stood there silently, his back on me. I know that maybe this is not the right time but it may also be the only time that I could talk to him so I decided to grab the chance and ask him.

“Why am I here?” I asked softly.

“It’s obvious that you’re here because I kidnapped you,” he said coldly.

            “But why?”

“What do you mean ‘why’? You know why!” He growled, this time he faced me angrily. I noticed a necklace with a cross hanging just above his chest. I quickly shove my attention away from his necklace and back to his icy blue eyes, which seemed to be on fire somehow.

“No, I don’t know,” I said softly, trying to be as calm as possible.

“We know that you’re their leader and we know about your plan!” he hissed.

            “What plan?” I asked, confused.

“Don’t act so innocent! You can’t fool us!”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about!” I yelled, leveling the tone of his voice.

“Just stop pretending!” he yelled then turned around. “Just eat you’re damn food.”

“Why did you kiss me then?” I asked suddenly. The second those words came out of my mouth, I regretted it. I don’t know what came over my mind. I just directly asked it without even thinking.

There was a long awkward silence between us. He just stood there quietly while I stared at his back, waiting for his answer. Then my attention was distracted by the bundle of keys hanging by his side. Without second thoughts, I focused my mind and discreetly moved his keys away from him. Slowly, it flew towards me until it was within my reach to grasp it. I was a bit startled when I heard him whispered his answer to my question.

“All part of the plan,” he whispered then went towards the door and disappeared.

I was left there alone in the silent room. I don’t know why but somehow my heart sank when he answered. Instead on thinking about that, I grabbed the tray and ate the food he gave me while grasping the keys secretly in my hand.

I leaned against the wooden door when I closed it. I sighed silently. Her last question kept repeating in my mind. Why did you kiss me then? Even I don’t know why I did it. I lied to her that it was all part of the plan in capturing her when the truth is that it wasn’t. It just happened. Suddenly, the scene in the ball flashed in my mind. The moment I saw her in that room, my purpose for going there was suddenly forgotten. She looked nothing like the awful demon I’m trying to tell myself she is. In fact, she looked beautiful that night. She almost looked like an angel. And the way her eyes sparkled was just mesmerizing. I don’t know what came over me when I kissed her but I know that I didn’t regret doing it.
