TWELVE

I felt uneasy as I saw Samantha and the guy walking outside. There’s something about him that made me suspicious. As much as I wanted to follow the two, I felt that I shouldn’t barge into their business. It’ll just make me uncomfortable. So instead, I walked towards the punch bowl and poured myself a glass of punch.

“Look who’s here!” I heard a familiar voice beside me. I turned and saw a girl filling her own glass with the drink. It’s not that hard to recognize who she is.

            “Having fun?” I asked her.

“Hell no,” she said as she leaned lightly against the table. “I thought you were dancing with Sam.”

“Tss.” Somehow that pissed me off. I just don’t want to hear it over again.

“I wonder who that gorgeous guy is,” Jen said as she sipped from her glass.

“Whoever he is, I don’t think Sam will be safe with him,” I said to her as I watched the crowd in front of us.

“If I know you better, I think you’re jealous,” she said, smirking at me.

            “Jealous? Who are you kidding?”

“Don’t try to hide the obvious, honey.”

I just rolled my eyes and heard her chuckled silently. “Would you care to dance?” she asked afterwards. I sighed then placed my glass on the table and followed her towards the dance floor. We danced a few songs before I noticed that Sam has not come back yet. It concerns me. When we finally stopped dancing, I excused myself from Jen and went towards Sam’s father.

“Have you seen Sam?” Her father asked when he saw me. “The highlight of this ball will start in a minute.”

“No sir,” I said to him. “She didn’t come back yet.”

“I’m getting worried. Could you follow her outside?”

“Yes sir,” I nodded then ran outside.

I went to the garden but saw no one. The moonlight was covered with thick clouds, which made the place dark. I looked around but still couldn’t find Sam. Suddenly, a small thing from the ground caught my eye. I walked towards it and saw the white mask, which the guy wore. Not far from the mask was Sam’s own black mask. Something was definitely wrong. I continued to walk around the garden. And what I found next made me froze.

I knelt down and picked up a familiar white soft feather, lying just a few feet from where the masks are. “Damn!” I cursed silently as I ran back inside.

I slowly opened my eyes and found myself in a cold dark cellar, sitting on a corner. I felt a cold thing grasping my wrist tightly and saw a huge chain. I tried to free myself from it but failed. Suddenly, I heard faint voices not far. My eyes were still adjusting to the dark so I wasn’t able to recognize the persons in front of me.

“What do you want me to do with her?”  I heard Nathaniel’s familiar icy voice not far.

“For now, we have to wait.” An unfamiliar voice said. It sounded soft and gentle.

“Wait?” I heard another voice and made me realize that there were three of them. “Why wait when we already have her?” The other one sounded irritated and impatient.
