TWO

The sun was up high as we stood in the middle of the field, which was in the back of the manor. In front of was a huge green tent prepared for us. Inside, were a couple of obstacles. It was our last test before we graduate tomorrow. I looked at Jared, who was standing beside me. His eyes were focused on the entrance of the tent in front. We grouped in two and two pairs must fight against each other to get their team’s flag at the far end of the tent. Jared and I were grouped together and we were assigned the color yellow.

We stood at the corner of the field while the other team stood at the other side. I tied my hair into a tight ponytail. I took a deep breath, preparing myself. Jared tapped my back lightly.

“Let’s do this,” he said, smiling at me. I immediately got my strength then nodded and smiled back at him.

Prof. Arnold Glinn stood in the middle. He repeated the rules and the goals of this test before placing his whistle by his mouth. He blew it hard and the four of us went running inside.

“Stay beside me, Sam!” I heard Jared yelled. In front of us was a huge square dug deep. It was full of tubes emitting flames, which almost hit the top of the tent. There were elevated grounds scattered in between.

“Hold on to me,” Jared said then put his arm around my waist. I held on his arm tightly as we teleported to the nearest elevated ground. The tubes burst flames around us, which made the place hot. Sweat rolled by my cheek as we continued to teleport to the next ground. A flame suddenly burst by my back and almost hit me.

            “Are you okay?” Jared asked.

“I’m fine,” I said to him.

We teleported farther and farther until we reached the end. In front of us was a maze made by huge hedges. I remembered Prof. Glinn saying that it was enchanted or rather designed to test our skills. We both went inside the opening. It was silent and dim. We carefully walked together as we turned to another path. Suddenly, a huge growl engulfed the whole place. We stopped on our tracks and looked around. When I turned around, I saw a huge wolf running towards us. It was ten times larger than the common wolves.

“Run!” I yelled at Jared then grabbed his hand and ran to the other way. We turned to different directions, still holding each other’s hand so that no one would fall behind. I looked back and saw nothing. The wolf must’ve missed a turn and lost us. We stopped to catch our breath when a loud whimpering was heard.

“Nice one, Matt!” A girl’s voice can be heard not far. The other team must be near. She laughed loudly as she continued to praise her teammate in killing the wolf.

“Let’s go before they catches us.” Jared whispered then continued walking. We reached the center of the maze, which was in a circle form. Paths encircled the place, which made it confusing. In the middle stood a rectangular stone and on top it were weapons of all kinds. Jared quickly went towards it and grabbed the sword.

“Come on. Pick your weapon before they get here,” he said.

I quickly took huge steps towards him and reached for the bow and arrow. He smirked. “Just as I thought.”

I just smiled at him in response. Before we could pick which path we should go, I heard the other team getting closer. They weren’t talking so Jared couldn’t hear their approach but their thoughts were loud and clear to me.
