FOURTEEN

I sat beside my father’s bed as I watched him sleep. The sun was already up but I never left my father’s side. I was so worried and terrified last night that I didn’t even slept a wink, hoping that he would wake up soon. But he didn’t.

The doctor came within minutes last night and treated my father. He told me that it was a huge wound, probably stabbed from a dagger. After that night, he came every two hours to check on my father. He kept telling me that I should get some rest but I dismissed him. I kept thinking about my father’s wounds. He was stabbed by a knife. It could be him. But why? He was after me but he tried to kill my father.

I let out a huge sigh and buried my face in my palm. I heard the door opened softly but ignored it. Footsteps were getting louder but still I didn’t look up. I felt a large hand on my shoulder.

“You should get some sleep, Sam,” I heard a familiar voice.

“I can’t,” I sobbed. “This is all my fault.” I looked up and stared at those familiar brown eyes that always make me a little calmer. Jared sat down to my level and held my face with his warm hand. He wiped the tear that rolled down my cheek.

“Don’t blame yourself,” he said. “It’s not your fault.”

“But it is!” This time I couldn’t stop my tears from falling. I buried my face with both of my hands as I sobbed. “I know he’s after me… that angel! And because of me, my father got involved! I should’ve never came back here! It’s all my fault!”

Jared slowly pulled me towards him and locked me in his tight hug, which made me feel safe. I sighed as I buried my face in his wide chest and continued crying. For a few minutes, we stayed in that position until I became calmer.

Jared was brushing my hair as he hugged me. I secretly looked at his face and I saw hurt in his eyes. I’m glad that he’s here with me in these tough times. He was the best friend that I could ever ask for.

I slowly put Samantha down her bed and covered her with the blanket. She fell asleep while she was crying for almost half an hour in her father’s room so I carried her all the way to her room. Her face was peaceful now but I could still see the dried tracks of her tears on her cheeks. I wish I could take all of the pain she has right now.

I sat down beside her bed and removed strands of hair that were covering her face. I sighed as I caressed her face gently. I stared at her for a few more minutes before deciding to leave.

“Sleep now, my princess,” I whispered then kissed her forehead gently and left her room silently.

I was walking down the hallway when I remembered what she told me in her father’s room. If she was the reason why that angel was here, then I should protect her. She told me that he kept her in an old cabin hidden in the woods not far from here. I’ll start searching from there. If that angel is a danger to Samantha then there’s only one thing to end all of this. I must kill him.

I went straightly to my room and grabbed a silver dagger hidden in a drawer of my dresser. I placed it on my back, under my shirt. Once I was set, I went down and made my way outside the manor discreetly. When I finally got out of the gate without anyone noticing me, I ran towards the direction Samantha told me.

After hours of running and walking, I found the streetlight that Samantha was referring to. The cabin must be close. I went inside the woods, searching. It was dark and the moon seems to be against me as it was hiding behind thick clouds. All of a sudden, I heard flapping of wings not far. I hurriedly went towards it and hid behind a huge trunk.
