SIX

The three of us ate our dinner happily like some sort of a family. Aida cooked some chicken with rice. It was the best homemade food I’ve ever tasted. She was like my second mother at that time. And after we ate, we went to the patio and continued to chat.

It was late when we decided to go back in. Jared made his way to his room while I helped Aida to wash the plates.

“Thank you dear.” She said as I lend her a hand. “You know, you really reminded me of your mother.”

I looked at her in curiosity of what she meant. She chuckled softly at my expression then continued to wash the dishes. “Do I really resemble my mother?” I asked.

“Oh yes. You’re the spitting image of your mother.” She nodded, her eyes still on the plate she was holding. “But you’re as kind as her too.”

            “Really?”

“Yeah. You know, she took me in when she saw me on the streets looking for food in the dumpster?” she asked me. I just looked at her, apparently shocked at what she said. She just chuckled then continued. “Your mother gave me a second chance in life, sweetheart. And I owe her my life for that.”

We finished washing everything then went upstairs to our bedrooms. We each said ‘goodnight’ to one another before we entered our own rooms. By how Aida described her, my mother sounded like an angel. I looked at the diary on top of the bedside table. Why did she sound different in those entries?

I walked towards my bed then sat down. I grabbed the diary and stared at it for a moment. There must something in here that I didn’t know. I turned the pages to where I put my bookmark.

Adelynn’s Diary

22nd of March 1892

Today I found out that he would have a vacation on some island tomorrow. It will be a perfect time for me to kill him. I also gathered some information about him. He’s currently living in his parent’s Manor. They carry the name ‘Scott’ to disguise themselves among humans. But I could tell that he was not human. He was a demon that needs to be destroyed. He’s the heir to their leader and if I can’t kill him, we will lose this war. I also found out that whenever a human suspects them, they would change their name. He has been called ‘Stephen’, ‘Viktor’, and ‘Erik’ for the past years. But since he became 15, he stuck to the name that he’d been carrying until now: Nicholas.

-A.

My mother was trying to kill my father? Why? Why would she kill him? What was her goal? This were all to confusing for me. The parents of mine that I knew loved each other. Why would it sound here that they were enemies? And what war was she talking about here?

I wanted to read more but I felt drowsy. I looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was past midnight. I decided to read more entries tomorrow morning. So I closed the diary and placed it on the bedside table and lied down the bed. I turned off the bedside lamp and drifted of to sleep.

I looked at her window as the light turned off. She must be asleep right now. It will be easy for me to kill her now. I spread my wings and flew silently to the balcony. I opened the door and slowly walked in to her room. It was dark inside. The moonlight was the only thing that made me see through the room. I walked silently towards the bed, where I saw her sleeping peacefully. She was indeed peaceful when she slept. She was like a harmless innocent girl. Well, she’s no harmless to all. She’s a threat to all of us and I need to end that.

I stood beside her bed and took my knife behind me. I stared at her for a moment before putting my knife by her throat carefully. The moonlight made it glimmer as I leaned towards her. And just before I could stab her, she opened her eyes widely then yanked away from me.

“W-who are you?” she asked. Apparently, she couldn’t see me because I was standing in the dark side. She stood at the other end of the bed and slowly took a step back. Fear was written all over her face.

“Not so tough for a demon, are you?” I said to her icily.

“You need to leave or I will call the authority.” She threatened in a shaky voice.

I laughed at her fake threat then stepped into the moonlight for her to see me clearly. She gasped at what she saw. I gripped my knife tightly as I walked towards her. She took as step back until her back was on the wall. She was now trapped.

I stood in front of her and put my arm across her shoulders. She closed her eyes in pain as she struggled from my grasp. It was confusing why she didn’t scream when she saw or when I knocked her on the wall. Stupid demon. Didn’t she know that she would be killed tonight?

I pointed my knife on her throat. Her eyes became watery as she looked at my, confused. She was breathing hard and I could feel her heart beating fast.

“Y-you’re an angel.” She stuttered silently.

“It took you long enough to figure out what I am?” I said sarcastically.

“What do you want?” she asked softly, trying to control her shaking voice.

“I want you to be killed.” I said directly in a low tone. When I said this to her, I thought she would scream and struggle away from me. But she didn’t. Instead, she asked me again.

            “Why?”

“It’s none of your business.” I said, irritated. I scraped a line down her neck with my knife. She squinted in pain. “Why aren’t you screaming for help?”

“Do you want me to?” she asked me.

The way she was acting was weird and it irritated me. I pushed her harder against the wall and I saw her shut her eyes, trying to hold back her screams.

“Nathaniel,” she whispered. “They call you Nathaniel, am I right?”

“How did you know that?” I asked in shock. Before she could answer my question, I felt her reading my thoughts. Immediately, I blocked her telepathy and loosened my grip on her. She just looked at me, her face was blank. I looked at the blood dripping down slowly down her neck but she didn’t seem to mind. I looked at her suspiciously. What was she trying to do?

I tried to focus on my mission and looked at her angrily. “You will not read my mind the way that you want.” I said in a loud voice and threw her across the room, knocking her on the dresser. The loud breaking of the glasses and the other things made the boy to the next room wake up. I could hear him walking towards her room.

“Sam, what’s wrong?” he asked sleepily while he turned on the knob.

I looked at her as she stared at me. There were no expression in her face but I could see a lot of emotions in her eyes. A drop of blood rolled down her forehead as she sat up. “This will not be the end.” I said to her firmly then flew outside the balcony, just in time for the boy to get in.

“Oh my god, are you okay?” Jared asked as he ran towards me and looked at my wounds. I continued to stare at the balcony where he had disappeared. “What happened to you?” I heard him ask.

“Nothing.” I said quietly. I don’t want to talk about this to him.

“Come on, let’s treat those wounds.” He said and held my arm and assisted me to stand up. He guided me to my bed and I sat down. “I’ll go and wake up Aida.” He said then ran outside. I sat silently on my bed as I began to think about what happened a while ago. An angel trying to kill me? But why? There’s only one way to find out. I have to ask my father about this. Until then, I couldn’t tell this to anyone.
