Nicky's POV
I woke up to Chris talking on the loud speaker. But, what caught me off guard is 1) this is not my bed, 2) this isn't even my cabin, and 3) there is an arm around me.
I sat up quickly, and saw that I was in the same bed as Duncan.
He too was up.
"Um. Why am I here?" I asked, moving away from him slightly. "Well, I went to check on you, and you seemed cold when you were sleeping, so Bridget said I should just take you over here. There a problem?" he asked. I shook my head.
"No. Just surprised is all. Thank you" I said, and got down.
Only to fall on my face.
I hate being short.
Duncan laughed. "Oh, your too much, Shorty!" he laughed and I blushed and got up.
He hopped down. "We need to talk tonight" he said quietly. "Why?" I asked. He held up a tape. My tape. My eyes widened, and I tried to snatch it from him.
"Nuh uh. We will talk about this after the challenge" he said, and he walked out. My breathing quickened. He must have listened to it, god damn it!!
I honestly wasn't that mad, just scared. What if he thought I was weak?
I sighed, and calmed down, and went to my cabin. I got dressed and followed Bridget to a stage.
I sat down, and Duncan sat in front of me.
And he leaned his back against my legs. "Umm" was all I said. "Your comfy to lay on" was all he said before Chris walked out on the stage.
"Welcome to our brand new deluxe, state of the art, outdoor amphitheater. Okay, this week's challenge is a summer camp favorite. A talent contest!" Chris said.
Owen stood up and cheered, "Yes! Awesome!"
I slouched a bit. I hated crowds, ever since fifth grade, I've had terrible stage fright.
I was doing a speech, and I totally forgot my lines, and I said something, I don't remember what, and my only friend at the time, Kelly, actually started crying (Totally true story in real life for me. Even the part where my friend Kelly cried. Kelly, if your reading this, you are the bestest friend ever!)
"You okay, Shorty?" Duncan asked, looking up at me. I nodded. "I just have stage fright is all" I muttered, and Chris continued.
"Each team has eight hours to pick their three most talented campers. These three will represent them in the show tonight. Sing, dance, juggle, anything goes-- as long as it's legal" he said pointedly at Duncan, who snapped his fingers. I chuckled at this.
"You'll be judged by our resident talent scout, former DJ-VJ and Rap legend, Grand Master Chef, who will show his approval via the Chef-o-Meter. The team that loses will send one camper tonight. Good luck!" he said, walking off the stage. With that, the teams went their separate ways.
For us, the first people to try out were Katie and Sadie.
They did this weird, horrible dance, which involved them shaking their butts, and ending with the splits.
We voted no for them.
Next up was Tyler with a yo-yo. He ended up thing himself up. "Man, that is weak" Chris said before walking over to me.
"Some dude sent this to me to give to you" he said, handing me a piece of paper.
"Wait! How come she gets letters, yet we don't!?" asked Courtney. "My show, my rules" Chris said with a shrug.
***
Chris: "Yeah, I lied. The dude that sent this also came with a death threat towards me if I didn't give that to Nicky. He claimed to be her boyfriend, but I don't think Nicky would put up with him. If she does, I feel so bad for her."
***
I breathed in a sharp breath.
"Um. I-I'll be right back" I said, and went to my cabin just as I heard Owen burp the whole ABC's.
"Nice!" I called over to him with a smile, before going inside.
I sat on my bed, and opened the letter.
Nicky,
You little b!tch. The minute you leave, you start sleeping with other guys and being careless! You only just realized that tape was missing!!
Maybe I ought to remind you of what happens when you cross me.
-- Claude
There was a tape and a picture. The picture was of Sammy. She had fresh cuts on her face, and she was crying. I gasped, and felt like crying.
I started listening to the tape.
It had recordings of Sammy screaming, and the sound of gun shots.
I started crying.
I yanked off the ear buds and threw the tape at the wall.
I wrapped my arms around my legs, and cried harder.
My sister, my baby sister is probably dying because of me.
"Nicky!? What happened!?!" Bridget, Geoff, DJ, and Duncan raced over. "It's nothing" I said. Duncan looked over at the tape on the ground.
"What did it say this time?" he asked softly. I shook my head.
"Not with the cameras around" I said. "Can someone tell us what's going on!?" Bridget asked, clearly concerned.
DJ picked up the letter. I tried to snatch it from him, but he was too tall.
He read it, and he looks at me.
"Explain to us what this is" he said, looking like he also was about to cry. "When there aren't any cameras" I said again, and went to the bathroom. Bridget followed me.
"Please. What's going on?" she asked gently.
"Um. I-I haven't been completely honest about what goes on at home" I said.
"Um, I've been with Claude since I was fifteen. He, um, started abusing me two years ago. And he would threaten whenever he wanted to get me to do something, that he would kill my sister. I, um, have a, uh, a tape that I use to motivate myself when I don't want to do something. Claude made it. It's the recordings of when he first tortured Sammy" my voice broke, and tears fell.
"Oh my god" Bridget whispered, and she hugged me. "I am so sorry" she said, rubbing my back.
"There was a picture with the letter, and it showed Sammy with cuts and bruises. Because of him, she's half blind, and now because I was careless, she might be dead right now!" I cried. "I am so sorry" Bridget repeated.
"What about your parents!?" she asked.
I chuckled humorlessly.
"My dad's a workaholic, my mom and brother are dead, and my step mom used to do what Claude does to me" I said.
"Oh my god!" she whispered, and hugged me tighter.
"Once this is over, your staying with me" she said, grabbing my wrists.
"No. I don't want to impose. And , I turn eighteen in a few months, I can leave then. I might go to the a
US" I said.
"Until then. Okay?" she said.
"Thank you" I said, and hugged her. But, my wrists started itching, and I scratched.
Yeah, bad idea.
I winced when I accidently reopened a cut, and it started bleeding.
Bridget noticed, and she rolled up my sleeves.
"Nicky!!" she exclaimed.
She took action, and started to patch up my wrists.
"Why!?" she asked.
"Not now. This is the most I've ever opened up to anyone, so, please. I don't that want to explain anymore" I said. She sighed, and nodded.
"I won't tell anyone. Unless, can I tell Geoff and DJ?" she asked.
I sighed, and nodded.
"Duncan said he wanted to talk after the challenge, so I'll tell him then" I said.
"Okay. Come on. We have to meet up with our team" she said, and she led me to the stage.
DJ and Duncan were playing cards, and Geoff was spinning a wheel on his skate board, but they all seemed distracted.
Their faces lit up when they saw us. "Everything okay?" asked Geoff. Bridget nodded. "I'll explain to you two later. Nicky will talk to you after the challenge, Duncan" she said. They all nodded, and I just sat down on the ground.
Duncan sat next to me and wrapped his arms around me.
But, I shrugged him off.
I looked him in the eyes, and saw he was slightly hurt.
I held his hand, and gave him the smallest of smiles.
"I'll tell you later" I promised, and he nodded.
"So, can you really stand on your hands for twenty minutes?" asked Geoff to Bridget.
"Wanna bet that I can't?" she asked, holding up a chocolate bar. "Oh, your on!" he said. "I'll take a piece of that action" Harold joined. "Yeah, it's like, virtually imposssible" DJ joined in.
"Anti up" Bridget challenged.
Everyone except me and Courtney put in something. I would never bet against Bridget.
"Okay, twenty minutes starting now" she said, and started doing a hand stand.
To keep her balance, she started walking. She walked past Courtney, and accidently got her leg wrapped around the rope. She pulled, and a light fell, and hit Courtney on the head, and breaking her violin.
"Oh, crap!!" Bridget yelled.
A few minutes later, Courtney was sitting with Katie and Sadie. Bridget walked over to apologized, and I stood next to her.
"You! You killed my violin!" Courtney, looking ready to cry.
"I didn't mean to! There must me something we can do!" Bridget said, trying to fix it.
But, she only broke the violin even more, and Courtney started wailing like a child.
Soon, everyone was sitting, getting ready for the show.
I was sitting in the bleachers next to Duncan.
I looked over at him, and we smiled slightly.
"Why are you nice to me?" I asked randomly. He shrugged. "It's hard to be mean to you when your so nice to everyone. Even to people who don't deserve it" he said. I turned slightly red, before Bridget waved me over.
"I'll be right back" I said.
"I can't do this" she said when I got over there.
I gripped her shoulders. "If you want, I can go up there" I offered. "Yeah? What can you do?" asked Courtney, slightly snobbish.
"Courtney, lay off!" Bridget defended me.
"I can sing. There is this lullaby that I used to sing to my sister whenever she got nightmares" I said.
"Okay, fine" Courtney said, and I nodded. "Thank you, Nicky" said Bridget. I shrugged.
"It's the least I can do" I said, and Chairs walked on stage.
"It's the TDI talent extravaganza! Welcome to the very first camp Wawanakwa talent contest, where six campers will show case their mad skills and desperately try not to humiliate themselves. First up for the Screaming Gophers, is Justin" Chris said, and Justin came on stage.
She started doing some sort of photo shoot, and poured water on himself. I grimaced.
I don't get why he got a good score.
"Okay, I don't know what that was, but dang, you got some moves dude" Chris said as Chef gave himself a six out if nine.
The Gophers cheered.
"First up for the Killer Bass, make some noise for the big guy, DJ!" chairs announced.
DJ came up and did some sort of ribbon dance thing. He would have done really well, had he not accidently tied himself up.
"Dainty, and yet masculine. Let's see what Grand Master Chef thinks" said Chris.
DJ only got a two out of nine.
"Not much" said Chris.
"So, with two acts down, abd for to go, it's the Screaming Gophers screaming ahead. Next on deck, is Trent" Chris said. DJ walked off stage. I gave him a hug.
"Better luck next time" I said. "Thanks Nicky" he said, and we smiled.
Trent did a love song, and it was obviously for Gwen. They would be so cute together!
After the song, the Gophers got an eight out of six.
"Nice work! I'm loving your style, and so is Grand Master Chef!" Chris said, and Trent waved into the camera.
"Okay, quit hogging my light buddy" Chairs then said annoyed. "Three down and three to go, and the Killer Bass are totally sucking so far! Let's hear it for Nicky!" Chris announces. My heart beat faster, and I walked out on the stage.
I clenched my fists.
"Okay, um, well, gonna do a lullaby I used to sing to my sister" I said.
(Just listen to this song, it's what she sings)
Once I finished, I was surprised for myself for actually remembering that song.
The whole crowd erupted on cheering.
"Wow! Never thought you had it in you! That is a total of eight points for the Killer Bass!" Chris announces, and I rushed off the stage.
I went to the bleachers next to Duncan, who hugged me.
"Great job, Shorty!" he said, and I smiled.
"I'm just glad I remembered all of it" I said.
"And now, for the Screaming g Gophers, Heather!" Chris said, and she walked up, and sat on a stool.
"Originally, I was going to dance for you. But instead, I want to celebrate team spirit, with a collaboration" she started, holding up a diary.
Gwen became nervous, and I right away covered my ears to at least give her the smaller bit of privacy.
I didn't hear what Heather said, but it was bad enough when Gwen ran off.
"Well then, it's down to the final act of the night. Can Geoff and his rad stunts turn it around? I seriously doubt it. Let's find out!" Chris said. But instead of Geoff, Harold went up.
But he started beat boxing? And it was actually good!?
Everyone started cheering.
"Wicked beat boxing dude!" Chris exclaimed as Chef gave him all nine points.
"Check it out! Grand Master Chef has declared his winner! Even though they held the lead, the Screaming Gophers have been trampled by the Killer Bass!" Chris said as Bridget and Courtney hugged Harold.
"And as for the Screaming g Gophers. Pick your favorite loser, and I'll see you at the bond fire" Chris said as we all went back our cabins.
I started walking to the cabins, but Duncan pulled me to the side.
He led he towards the woods. I sighed.
"I've been with Claude for two years. He tortured me, but now tortured my sister so that I'm basically his puppet. My dad is a workaholic, so he doesn't know, my mom and brother are dead, as you already know, and my step mom used to do the same thing to me, but Claude is worse" I summed it all up for him.
But I left out the mental abuse that leads me to cutting, and the fact that I've almost died to many times to count.
Duncan pulled me in for a hug.
"Y'know. My parents are cops. They can arrest him, and save your sister" he offered.
I looked up at him.
"Really!?" I exclaimed. He nodded.
I hugged him tighter. "Thank you! This really means the world to me" I said.
"No problem Nicky. But, quick question. What was on the newest tape?" he asked, and fresh tears welled up in my eyes.
"There were, um, gunshots. I don't know if she is even alive or not" I choked up, and he hugged me tighter. "She has to be alive" he muttered, and I got tired.
"Thank you. I'm going to bed" I said.
"If you want, you can keep sleeping with me" he offered as we walked back.
"Maybe" I said.
"That wasn't a question" he said, and we both got ready for bed. He grabbed my wrist, and pulled me to the guys side of the cabin.
I winced, and hoped that Duncan didn't notice, but he did. He pulled up my sleeves, and sighed.
"Your explaining tomorrow" he said, and gently led me to his bed. I nodded, and he also climbed up.
"Hey, where's Nicky?" asked Courtney through the wall.
"Probably with Duncan" said Bridget. "But that's against the rules" she said.
"But Duncan is helping her. Besides, he really likes her" I heard Bridget say. I turned red, and turned my back against the wall.
Slowly, I fell asleep.
Duncan's POV
I looked down at the red head next to me.
I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that she has been tortured all her life, get she still manages to put on a smile and be nice to everyone. She really is the strongest person I know.
I kissed her forehead, and pulled her closer to me, and slowly fell asleep as well.
But I smirked when I heard Heather start screaming.
Okie dokie! Nice and long, I hope you enjoyed this!
So, I know I'm making Duncan a giant softie, but I figured it would go along with the story better. Also, I know this all kind of comes in fast, but I kind of want this book to be more about Nicky healing and getting over her fear of her sister getting murdered, and finding real love, so yeah.
And go comment a few suggestions, I'm open to listening.
Or, if your having problems, again, I will listen and try to help as much as I can!
Love you all!
