As it grew later, I grew more restless than ever. Fagan returned, but he just pulled out his headphones and ignored me in favor of playing a game on his laptop.
I left the room, needing to be out and moving around. The lampposts around the campus had come to life, lighting up the walkway as I stepped outside.
It was quiet outside and I leaned against the side of the building, closing my eyes as I took in the chilly air. I could hear a faint, familiar voice and went down the steps, creeping along the side of the building silently until I could clearly hear Beckett's voice.
"-be a good way to get to Constance. The only way we can think of, actually." Beckett went silent for a minute. "I know, Kaz, but you never..." He stopped again, listening for a minute before sighing. "Well, fuck you too. You never had to deal with Leon Constance when you were here."
I stuffed my hands in my pockets and stepped into Beckett's line of sight. He glanced at me in annoyance.
"I've got to go. I was being eavesdropped on," he said.
"Oh, no, don't stop on my account," I said.
Beckett glared. "What? No, don't worry about it, Kaz. Oh, shut up, you live with the definition of obnoxious sarcasm, so fuck you." His lips twitched as he fought not to smile. "I know. I'll text you later."
He hung up the phone and I leaned against the side of the building. I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Having second thoughts?" I said.
"Mind your own business," he said.
"I keep hearing about this infamous Casimir Warrick guy," I said.
"Kaz has a big enough ego. He doesn't need to know he's still a legend around here," Beckett grumbled.
"Seems like a good friend if you go to him for your doubts," I said.
Beckett shrugged, standing up. "He's been my friend for a while."
"He graduated six years ago, right? So he's, what, 23?" I said.
Beckett nodded. "Yea, he's 23 and I'm 17 and that doesn't mean shit. We're still friends."
"I wasn't saying you couldn't be friends," I said. "I have friends who are older than me. Anyways, that wasn't my point here. I need to talk to you."
I hadn't meant to talk to Beckett, but since I'd run into him, I might as well see how much he knew. He seemed to be a pretty observational guy.
We both sat against the side of the building. "Did you notice the way Leon acted around me?" I asked.
Beckett nodded. "He would never say anything about it. As far as he's concerned, he'll be single for the rest of his life. I figured that was between the two of you."
"I'm not here for friends or a boyfriend," I said.
"Then what are you here for?" he said.
Crafty little bitch, huh? "I'm here because I got in trouble. Same as the rest of you, I'd assume. Fagan told me his story and you told me yours. Tessa is the only one I don't know."
