I didn't remember nodding off, but when I cracked my eyes open and checked the time, almost four hours had passed. Leon was still fast asleep against my shoulder, and I didn't want to wake him up.

Still, I knew if I let him sleep too long now, he'd never go to bed at night. I probably should've woken him up after an hour, but apparently I was a lot more tired than I had realized.

"Hey," I said, shaking his shoulder. "Leon, wake up."

His eyes snapped open and he sat up. "Do you need something?"

"Jesus," I said, jumping back a little. "Most people are groggy and confused when they wake up."

"Oh, sorry." He rubbed his eyes and stretched. "How long did I fall asleep for?"

"Long enough," I said. "Feel a little more rested?"

He nodded. "Yea, I feel better now. Thanks, Brennan."

"So what happened last night?" I asked, pulling him back down next to me.

He curled up against me. "My dad and Adam showed up after you guys left. We all went home and my mom confronted my dad. Apparently, he hadn't told her he was switching me to a new school. He had an Academy picked out and everything. She asked him if it was because I was dating a boy. I told her what was really going on, and she told him he wasn't sending me away and he wasn't going to transfer for me to a new school in the middle of my senior year."

"Does your mom know what goes on at the Academy?" I asked.

He gave a slow nod. "Yes. She knows. I think she likes to tell herself my dad would never lay a hand on a child."

"There are other ways to hurt kids," I said.

"I know. I think she knows too. But she loves my dad." He took a breath. "Anyways, my parents are friends with Mr. Townsend. My mom was furious that my dad was going to put him on leave just to punish Beckett. She said it wasn't fair, especially since Mr. Townsend had asked for my dad's help when Beckett got too out of control. And she was mad about what he was doing to you. She said having a 17 year old boy arrested just because he was rowdy in school was wrong."

He fell silent for a minute. He reached out, putting his arm around me.

"When she was driving me home, I told her about you. About us. About how I was afraid to come out. And she told me God loves everyone, that shunning people for their sexualities was the true sin. She told me she loved me and always would, no matter who I date. So when my dad said how it would be best to get you away from me because you were a bad influence, my mom warned him he'd be getting rid of me, too. She knew I'd never forgive him if he had you arrested. And she said she'd never forgive him for hurting me like that." He looked up at me, eyes still tired despite his sleep.

I pulled him closer and kissed him. "I'm like a cockroach. I'm pretty damn hard to get rid of," I said.

"Stop it. Don't word it like that. I don't want to be dating a cockroach," he said, frowning.

"I can't believe you asked me out the way you did," I said. "You're so weird."

"Your room is really messy," he said, looking around, doing that obnoxious selective hearing thing.
