Leon waited for me to change out of my maroon vest and into regular clothes. He led me out of the dorm building and down towards the parking lot, nervously swinging his keys around his finger.
"If it gets awkward, I'll bring you back to campus," he said.
"How could it possibly get awkward? Your dad and I get along great," I said.
"Please just try not to say anything that'll get you into trouble. I know you struggle to keep your mouth shut, but I am begging you to have some semblance of self-control for just an hour or two," Leon said, that patiently exasperated expression on his face.
"I know myself, and therefore make no promises," I said.
Leon sighed hopelessly and got in his car. I climbed into the passenger seat and stared out of the window as we left the campus. I'd been expecting to leave in a cop car, not my boyfriend's car.
Leon hooked up his phone and let me pick the music. We fell into comfortable silence, watching the town blur by as Leon drove.
He parked in the driveway of an incredibly nice looking house. We got out of the car and I admired how nice his house was.
"Damn," I said. "Good to know my tuition went to good use."
Leon blushed. "My mom works a good job too! It's not like my dad just sets a high tuition so we have a nice house!"
"Well, lead the way," I said, trying to mentally prepare myself for the torture I was about to endure.
We walked up the driveway and Leon led me into the house. We took our shoes off and I followed him through the house until we reached a kitchen, where Leon's mom was busily moving about.
"Um, I brought Brennan," Leon announced.
Mrs. Constance whirled to face us. "Oh, welcome home, Leon. You're back before your father."
"Oh, thank god," I muttered in relief, wincing when Leon elbowed me.
"We didn't get to properly meet," Mrs. Constance said, wiping her hands on her apron and coming over to me. She held her hand out. "I'm Leon's mother, Abby Constance."
I shook her hand. "I guess our first meeting was a little peculiar. I'm Brennan Kipling."
"Go take a seat in the dining room. Dinner is almost ready." Abby checked the time. "Leon, your father should be home in just a few minutes. Get Brennan settled and then go get Adam and Caroline out of the study."
"They're here for dinner too?" Leon asked.
Abby nodded. "I asked Adam to come eat at the house tonight. I thought it would be good for Brennan to meet the family. We invited Adam's girlfriend to come have dinner with us when they started dating."
"Adam's not, you know..." Leon was fidgeting with his dice.
"Adam's not gay," I translated.
Abby blushed a little and shooed us away. "That doesn't make a difference. It's good for your family to know the people who are important to you. Now, go sit."
