As a superior race that was created equal, we were suppose to have no flaws. All the same, nothing quite different from the others. When I was born I was just like the others. I had the same hair, eye, and skin color and was
considered perfect. However, 2 years ago I started noticing something different about me. My eyes were no longer the dominant brown color, they were now blue.
Terrified of what the government might do to me if they found out, I was kept inside. Not much contact with anyone but family members. On the rare occasions of me venturing outside of the house, I wore sunglasses.
There was one flaw to the plan my parents put together. Once you are 18 years of age you are required to attend the Aequalis Celebration Ball. No sunglasses, gloves or headpieces are allowed.
This Ball was the high light of the year in Aequalis. It was the way we celebrated becoming the one true race. Men wore white suits and women wore red Ball gowns.
This year would be my first year of attending this Ball. It would be how my mutation is discovered.
.......
On my wall I had placed a calendar to count down the days until the ball. So far I only had 3 x's marked, with only just a few more to go.My half of a heart still did not glow. It didn't even emit the smallest amount of light. I began wondering if the reason I couldn't find my half was because I didn't have one. Maybe my mutation also caused me not to have a soulmate.
I looked over at my dress that hung in the corner. Every time I put it on I felt gorgeous. I thought about my soulmate seeing me in it. Would he think I looked gorgeous also? Thinking this was silly though, I might never find my soulmate.
Several people in my life had just disappeared after turning nineteen and not having a soulmate. My sister was one of them. Caitlyn had been my best friend and was the only one who understood me.
She was gone only a few days before my eyes changed. I had no one there for me and I suddenly felt all alone. Being different and stuck inside didn't help me cope with the loss either.
Everyday was a rollercoaster of emotions. I felt unstable and unhappy with my life. I mean who wouldn't after being through all that.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door that lifted me out of my deep thought. By the time I got to the door my parents were already standing there with the door open. Immediately after realizing who it was I lowered my gaze.
It was two government officials and if they saw my eyes they would be sure to take me away.
"You have been cordially invited to the Aequalis Celebration Ball." Spoke the first officer as he handed my father a white envelope.
"Red ball gowns are required for women and white suits required for men. Please refrain from wearing any eyewear or headwear. Have a good day." He finished and turned around.
Quickly retreating down the sidewalk to continue onto the next house.
My father opened the letter, " just the usual invitation we get every year." He sighed.
I knew what my parents were thinking and I was thinking the same. How were we going to pull this off?
