We quickly began weaving through the mass of people with my hand in his. Deep down, I knew the reason we were running. They knew. They had seen my blue eyes along with Elijahs and were now going to do everything in their power to extract these flaws from the society of perfection. However, I knew we were running for other reasons. Elijah has secrets, no doubt. It was apparent when I learned that he'd managed to hide under the government's noses these past few years when he did have a soulmate, how I did not know as you were required to notify the Recorders office in the Soulmate department. If you didn't inform them by the day of your 19th birthday, Detainment Officers were on your doorstep. Never to be seen or heard from again. I was pulled out of my thoughts, however when I heard the unmistakable screech of the microphone.
"I hate to interrupt your night of dancing, but something has been brought to my attention. There are Anomalies here with us tonight."
As the mayor uttered that last sentence, a chorus of gasps and whispers could be heard. People began looking around, trying to pinpoint the abnormality in the crowd. I kept my head low, trying to avoid their gaze, Elijah doing the same.
"Now, I don't want you worrying. Although, if you do see them, please notify an official immediately. Eliminating these abominations helps make society a happier and safer place."
Elijah pulled my arm, urging me to keep walking, this time at a faster pace.
"Where are we going? I can't just leave. My parents are here."
"Iris, I promise I'll explain it to you as soon we get away from here. They're coming for us, and we aren't safe here. They'll take you to The Asylum if we don't leave now."
Hearing the name of the place that everyone feared was enough. I nodded my head solemnly, the thought that I may never see my parents again ran through my mind. This was it. My life was going to change forever and drastically. We were only a few feet away from a dark hallway connecting to the ballroom when I heard a voice shout,
"They have blue eyes! Quick, someone, I found them!"
The ballroom turned into a chaotic frenzy with everyone trying to find the blue eyes. Running away from others and avoiding ones around them as they didn't want to be connected to an abomination. They didn't want to find the same fate that we might. Elijah grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the direction of the hallway and yelled,
"Run! Now!"
Following him, I had never run so fast in my life. I struggled to keep up as the weight and size of my dress made matters difficult. We finally reached the hallway, and the sounds of the crowd began to fade away. However, it was now replaced with the sound of footsteps, and they weren't ours.
"Stop! If you make this easy maybe we can make a few exceptions for you."
We had come to the end of the hall, with only a large window left in front of us. We were trapped. Elijah wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close as we turned to face the guards. The were all dressed in the standard black guard uniform each holding a gun. They weren't here to mess around.
"I highly doubt that." rumbled his voice with a hint of amusement.
Suddenly the group of guards parted and through them walked the Mayor.
"On the count of 3 jump through the window. Trust me. " Elijah whispered, his lips grazed my ear. Sending a jolt of butterflies and fear coursing through my body.
We were several stories up and jumping through that window would send us to our graves. Maybe that was his plan, to take his life before he would have to go through endless torture at The Asylum. Was I ready to do that too? Was I willing?
"So we have finally caught up to you, Prince Dambry." the Mayor spoke.
Prince Dambry who really is Elijah? What could he be a Prince of?
"One"
"To think all it took was cornering you in the hallway during the Celebration Ball while you tried to collect your pretty little soulmate. Quite anticlimactic for someone like you don't you think?"
"Two"
"Being quiet today are we Dambry? Well, no matter. I don't need you to speak to dispose of you."
"Three."
