I attempt to recollect myself and then change. When I finally step back into the room, Elijah has his back to me looking out the window.
"You have questions, yes?"
He doesn't turn around as he speaks just keeps looking out the window.
I wasn't going to wait any longer, now was my chance.
"Several. Start at the beginning, why are we here. How did we get here?"
"A War is coming Iris. Very soon, and either The Defiance will come out on top, or we will fall short. The Aeqalris government calls us The Anomalies, but not just for our physical appearance. There's something different about us. When our genes mutated and separated themselves from The Superior Race, something else happened. While the others became susceptible to various genetic disorders, although they became very good at hiding it, we became immune. Almost as though our DNA reset its self. That's not all, though; The Anomalies are increasingly becoming stronger than the average human. They didn't want you to know that, and they thought the Asylum was the perfect way to cover it up."
I couldn't speak, I couldn't breathe. My biggest fears were coming true. I knew something was not right, but I didn't realize it was anything like this. At the same time, though deep down, it felt like Id somehow always known.
Elijah turns around and takes a few steps towards me.
"That piece of jewelry on your neck. The soulmate necklace, at first, really was a way to find the other half of your soul. However, Aeqalris soon turned it into something evil."
He grasps the necklace hanging around my neck and runs his thumb across the blue jewel, examining it.
"When they discovered that unlike most humans who find their match between 16-18. Anomalies don't find there's until 19 or later. Sometimes never. The soulmate necklace is just a piece of technology, and because our genetics have changed, it doesn't work the same for us. They used these to discover who the Anomalies were because they want to destroy us."
"My sister, Caitlyn, " I let out in a hushed whisper.
"She never found her soulmate before her 19th birthday. They took her. Well, at least that's what I was told. She disappeared in the middle of the night."
"The Asylum was just a coverup for all the Anomalies that go missing. Many do get taken to The Asylum, but a few are lucky. As you can see, we are able to bring them here, or they find their way here. Your sister might be here, Iris, but some do change their name. So do not be surprised if she no longer goes by Caitlyn."
"So, you're telling me everything I've ever known is a lie?" I question sitting back down on the bed.
"I wish I could say it isn't so, but I'm afraid I can't." He looks into my eyes and tucks a piece of hair behind my ear.
I turn away and catch a glimpse out the window. People are walking around chatting, children playing in the grass. A sight so different from the one in Aeqalris. Perhaps because we were all too afraid of the chance of stepping out of line.
I didn't want a future like that.
I wanted the people and the children to be happy.
I wanted to fight. To truly be equal.
Without a second thought, I whisper,
"I'm in."_____________________________
